Steven Kwon oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Steven Kwon conducted by Stefani Evans on October 1, 2024 for the Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Kwon begins by describing his childhood in Seoul, Korea as the youngest of three children during the Korean conflict. In 1960, he served his compulsory military service, which was 18 months for students.

Gue Gim Wah Papers

Abstract

The Gue Gim Wah Papers (approximately 1940-1985) consist primarily of incoming correspondence (largely written in Chinese) to Gue Gim Wah at the Prince Mine in Pioche, Nevada. Also included are Wah's naturalization certificate, a map of the Prince Mine Bunkhouse, brochure of the Lincoln County Civic Association, and a small amount of photographs including a black-and-white photograph of Gue Gim circa 1940s.

Advanced Technologies Academy "Civic Voices" Oral History Project

Abstract

The Advanced Technologies Academy "Civic Voices" Oral History Project (2011-2012) consists of 33 oral histories of Las Vegas, Nevada residents conducted by students of Joyce O'Day's 2011 and 2012 AP World History classes at Advanced Technologies Academy. Each interview contains a physical transcript, assignment sheets, and digital video and photographs. The 2011 interviews also have digital transcripts.

George Durkin oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with George Durkin conducted by Claytee D. White on July 26, 2024 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Durkin describes his childhood in Schenectady, New York, where he first became interested in music. After college, Durkin enrolled in a master's program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and worked at Strip locations behind some of the great entertainers in the industry. While at UNLV, he studied with composer, arranger, and musician Don Hannah, and became a life-long friend of his son, Paul Hannah.

Rosenda Gomez oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Rosenda Gomez conducted by Stefani Evans on July 24, 2024 for Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Gomez describes her childhood and youth in General Luna, Surigao del Norte, Philippines. She shares about her family's financial struggles, becoming pen pals and eventually marrying an older American man, moving to Texas, and having a daughter. Desparate to leave an abusive marriage, she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1993 and worked at the El Cortez making change.

Abstract

The Norma Cooper Photograph Collection (approximately 1945-1955) consists of two black-and-white photographs. The first image shows an exterior view of the Ramona Room at Hotel Last Frontier, with four women sitting in chairs on the terrace. The second image is of Deanna Durbin and Felix Jackson's 1945 wedding at Little Church of the West.

James "Dee" Donithan Collection of Nevada Test Site Photographs

Abstract

The James "Dee" Donithan Collection of Nevada Test Site Photographs (approximately 1970-1999) consist of 8x10 photographs depicting flowers, landscapes, wildlife, workers, work sites, and testing equipment at the Nevada Test Site. The photographs were printed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Mercury, Nevada, and collected into a binder by James "Dee" Donithan.

Peter C. Bernhard Papers

Abstract

The Peter C. Bernhard Papers (1959-2013) contain programs and clippings related to youth sports in Southern Nevada. Materials include Bernhard's personal writings in the Las Vegas, Nevada Western High School newspaper, notebooks with clippings and annotations about the articles, athletic brochures, and Hyde Park Jr. High publications.
