Peter Eliades oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Peter Eliades on July 11 and 14, 2025 conducted by Stefani Evans and Claytee D. White for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Eliades begins by describing his early life in Kastoria, Greece, as he was born in 1933, the second child out of five. After surviving both World War II and the Greek Civil War, Eliades ultimately moved to the United States. First landing in New York, he later moved to Duluth, Minnesota.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Limmie Monroe, LuChana Turner, Francesca Monroe-Dixon, and Patricia Turner conducted by Claytee D. White on August 5, 2025 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, three generations of the Monroe family discuss living and growing up in the Westside of Las Vegas, Nevada. They take turns describing the businesses on Jackson Street, federal housing developments in the 1950s, later moving to Casper Park II where the matriarch, Limmie Monroe, still lives as of 2025.

Sherri Sullivan oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Sherri Sullivan conducted by Claytee D. White on July 23, 2025 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project.In this interview, Sullivan describes growing up in a family of school teachers, and becoming one herself. After about five years of teaching, she became a flight attendant with Hughes Airwest. She met her husband, William Sullivan, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He started programs like Gear UP, Upward Bound, and others working at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Nicole Garcia-Contreras oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Nicole Garcia-Contreras conducted by Claytee D. White and Stefani Evans on June 24, 2025 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Garcia-Contreras recalls what it was like growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada with her parents, who immigrated from Mexico in the 1990s. She attended Silverado High School, serving on student council and playing in the marching band. After graduating in 2022 with high honors, she enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) as a political science major.

Randy Garcia oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Randy Garcia conducted by Claytee D. White on March 28, 2025 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Garcia recalls his early life growing up in downtown Las Vegas, playing various sports with his friends and father. He recalls being the president of Bishop Gorman's pep band in high school, and collecting vinyl records and watching The Beatles perform when he was only ten years old. He attended UNLV then went on to Santa Clara Law School, ultimately dropping out and deciding to instead become a stockbroker.

Lohan School of Shaolin Records

Abstract

The Lohan School of Shaolin Records (1994-2025) document the activities of the Lohan School of Shaolin, a traditional Chinese martial arts school, based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The majority of the materials include digital photographs and videos documenting the Lohan School's Lion dance performances for Chinese New Year and other local celebrations around Las Vegas. Materials also include the Lohan School's kung fu student manuals, class schedules, and copies of the school's newsletter.

Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community Program Collection

Abstract

The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community Program Collection (2013-2022) consists of event programs from the Miss Asian North America and Miss Asian Las Vegas pageants from 2013, 2014, and 2016. The collection also includes the program for the OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates national convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2022.

Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority Roundtable Interview

Abstract

Roundtable interview with the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority (SNRHA) conducted by Claytee D. White and Jason Solorzano on April 9 and 10, 2025 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: An Oral History Project. In this interview, fifteen members of the SNRHA discuss the history of the organization, various programs and housing types available, job programs, and services that are available for families in Las Vegas.
