Abstract

Oral history interview with Eugene Buford conducted by Claytee White on September 12, 2006 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview Eugene Buford talks about his great grandmother, Mary Nettles, who was instrumental in the start and growth of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples (NAACP) in Las Vegas, Nevada. He speaks about his experiences with prejudice and discrimination, while reflecting upon what it was like being an African American growing up in Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Gene Collins conducted by Claytee White on August 31, 2000 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview Gene Collins speaks about how his family lived in West Las Vegas, Nevada, which at the time was a thriving community where African Americans owned their own businesses. Gene talked about how the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. led to a riot and how it inspired him to run for state assemblyman where he was instrumental in getting the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday bill to pass.

In this interview, Bunch discusses the origins of her dance career and the places her pursuit of this career took her. Bunch discusses the various shows she performed in both in the United States and Europe, and describes the differences between a dancer and a showgirl. Bunch describes the responsibilities and rights of dancers, their contracts, and their leisure activities.

Bryant begins the interview discussing her early life in Tallulah, Louisiana. Next Bryant discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to look for work in 1953. Bryant discusses at length life in Tallulah from work to race relations. Bryant goes on to discuss her husband and children and to describe their family life.

Oral history interview with Richard Bryan conducted by Claytee White on February 19, 2009 for the Voices of the Historic John S. Park Neighborhood. In this interview, Senator Bryan recounts details about the John S. Park neighborhood development. He mentions how neighborhood commerce included a grocery store and a Sills Drive-in. On the Las Vegas Strip, he remembers the Club Bingo (eventually called Sahara) opening as well as the long list of other hotel/casinos that are part of Las Vegas, Nevada history.

In the interview, Reverend Bennett gave his account of what Las Vegas, Nevada was like during the 1950s and 1960s. He talks about the Westside of Las Vegas during integration and speaks candidly about the racial tension that the community endured. Throughout the interview he spoke about well known early Las Vegans like Ruby Duncan, Mahlon Brown, Jack Anderson, and Dave Hoggard.
