Joni Naves-Neal Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Joni Naves-Neal Photograph Collection (approximately 1980-1982) contains two black-and-white photographic prints, one color photographic print, and one photographic negative. Two of the black-and-white photographic prints and the photographic negative are reproductions of an image of three gamblers seated at an overturned table with gaming materials and steins from approximately 1880. The final item is a color photographic print of the Tower Casino sign in Stateline (Primm), Nevada from 1982.

Pittman Family Photographs

Abstract

The Pittman Family Photographs depict members of the Pittman and Brewington families in Nevada from 1903 to 1989. The photographs primarily depict Nevada Governor Vail Pittman and his wife Ida Louise “Liz” Brewington Pittman at political campaign and fundraising events, including the Helldorado Parade in Las Vegas, Nevada and at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City, Nevada. The photographs also depict Governor Pittman with President Harry S. Truman, Jim Cashman, and family members. The photographs also include a group photograph of U.S.

Las Vegas Sun Photographs

Abstract

The Las Vegas Sun Photographs depict significant events in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1948 to 1989 that were covered by the newspaper. The photographs partially document the gubernatorial, senatorial, mid-term, and local elections in Nevada in 1982. The photographs also include protests by African Americans for better wages and renters for fair housing practices, McCarran Airport, protests against the Nevada Test Site, the Las Vegas Strip and downtown Las Vegas, hotels and casinos, political events, parades, dedications of buildings, and aerial photographs of the city.

Las Vegas Review-Journal Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Las Vegas Review-Journal Photograph Collection depicts several events in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1935 to 1983 that were documented by Nevada’s largest newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The photographs depict the fire at the Las Vegas School in 1935, the fire at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in 1980, an exhibition at the Lost City Museum in 1973, a memorial event honoring the first permanent school in Las Vegas in 1980, and an exhibition at the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society in 1983.

Clarence L. Cleveland Photographs

Abstract

The Clarence L. Cleveland Photographs depict Las Vegas, Nevada and other locations in Southern Nevada from 1932 to 1952. The photographs primarily depict locations on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, including the Pioneer Club, Frontier Club, Sal Sagev Hotel, Overland Hotel, Golden Nugget, and the Smith and Chandler "Indian Traders" store. The photographs also depict the Nevada desert, Lake Mead, Boulder City, Nevada, and the Helldorado Parade in Las Vegas.

Wengert Family Photographs

Abstract

The Wengert Family Photographs (1890-1966) depict the lives of the Wengert family. In addition are materials focusing on day-to-day activities such as holiday celebrations, family milestones, and some Southern Nevada Power Company employees. Although there are chronological gaps in the materials, particularly in the early years of Cyril and Lottie’s lives, the images provide historical documentation of this Las Vegas family.
