Oral history interview with Angela Castro conducted by Stefani Evans, Cecilia Winchell, Kristel Peralta, Vanessa Concepcion, and Ayrton Yamaguchi on November 05, 2020 for the Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. Castro begins the interview by talking about her early life, childhood, what Guam was like, and the history of her parents and grandparents. She describes the difference in public and private education in Guam and compares it to the United States. She explains the reason why she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1998 and attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for public relations. Castro then talks about the differences between older and newer generations, the political atmosphere in Guam, and the differences between the United States and Guam in politics. She also talks about the discrimination she has experienced throughout her life and diversity in the workplace. Lastly, she describes her culture and traditions during holidays, the struggles with an absence of culture within her family, and her personal religious beliefs.

Abstract

The Sherwin “Scoop” Garside Photographs contain photographs from journalist and photographer “Scoop” Garside from 1907 to 1969. The photographs primarily depict events and buildings in Southern Nevada, including construction of the Hoover (Boulder) Dam, the Helldorado Parade in Las Vegas, Nevada, hotels and casinos, schools, and social events. The photographs also depict the Garside Family, including Las Vegas Review-Journal owner Frank Garside, “Scoop” Garside’s father.

Beda and C. Norman Cornwall Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Beda and C. Norman Cornwall Photograph Collection (1940s-1978) primarily contains black-and-white photographic prints of Beda and C. Norman engaging in various civic activities. The collection also includes photographic prints of Beda Cornwall’s reception at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as well as C. Norman Cornwall’s riding group, the Los Rancheros Visitadores, during their trek through the Santa Ynez Valley in California. Beda Cornwall was the president of the Citizens’ Library Association of Las Vegas and C. Norman Cornwall was a prominent Las Vegas attorney.

Abstract

The Florence McClure Photograph Collection (approximately 1985-1997) consists of color photographic prints. Images show McClure and members of the Las Vegas, Nevada Community Action Against Rape (CAAR) organization that she co-founded with Sandi Petta in 1973. Also included are images of Nevada public figures and several travel images from China.
