Abstract

The Lake-Eglington Family Papers (1905-1983) consist of correspondence, school records, newspaper clippings, announcements, and receipts collected by Olive Lake-Eglington, a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada from 1904 until the early 1980s. Items of unique interest in the collection include a 1907 temperance pledge and World War Two ration books from 1943.

Description

On March 1, 1981, Alan Gurwitz interviewed Elton Garrett (born 1902 in St. Joseph, Missouri) about his experiences in Southern Nevada and more specifically his work in Boulder City. Garrett first talks about the development of Boulder City from its inception in 1931 and how it has grown throughout nearly fifty years. He also discusses his work in journalism for the Boulder City Journal, the building of Boulder Dam, and atomic testing at the Nevada Test Site. The second part of the interview involves a discussion of the founders of Nevada Southern University, Garrett’s work on legislative committees, and his work as a schoolteacher and school principal. The interview concludes with Garrett’s thoughts on the future of Boulder City and its continued growth.

Scope and Contents

The general records and papers series (1922-1978) contains newspaper articles dating from 1922, tracing the rise of burlesque in New York City, New York. This series also includes correspondence and papers about Harold Minsky and Eddie Lynch, his manager for many years, published articles about the various Minsky shows, photographs of showgirls, and rehearsal photographs for a show in New York City in 1964. Also included are book sale correspondence for The Night They Raided Minsky’s and promotional information on the motion picture of the same name, production cost receipts, bills, payroll receipts, profit and loss statements, and costume designs and prices.

Abstract

The S. R. Shapiro Collection (1799, 1960-1979) contains gaming instructions, pamphlets, menus, promotional material from travel agents and casinos, and correspondence from Las Vegas, Nevada casinos and casinos around the world. There is also a copy of a French natural history book titled Memories de la Societe d'histoire naturelle de Paris dated 1799. Inside the book are attached advertisements and lottery announcements from English newspapers.
