This series is comprised of materials from 1998 to 2006 that document the Jewish Genealogical Society of Southern Nevada (JGSSN) and genealogical research done by Mary Barkan. JGSSN records include newsletters, meeting announcements, an index of the newsletters, an index of names from the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, and an index of names from Las Vegas synagogue bulletins. Mary Barkan's genealogical research materials, created around the year 2000, include an autobiographical account of living in Las Vegas from 1977 to 2000 and family histories related to her husband, Barry Barkan.

Genealogist and former teacher Mary Flynn Barkan (1949- ) is an active member of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada (JGSSN) and a past president of the Friends of Southern Nevada Libraries. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada with her husband Barry Barkan in 1977. She taught at Cashman Junior High School before leaving the Clark County School District in 1981 to work at her husband’s company DeBarry Packaging. Mary Barkan became a member of the Friends of Southern Nevada Libraries in the early 1980s and joined the Board of Directors in 1983.
The Collection on the Las Vegas, Nevada Jewish Community spans from 1964 to 2006 and is comprised of scrapbooks, genealogies, ephemera, and other material produced by or for the community. The Hadassah scrapbooks date from 1964 through 1971 and contain invitations, photographs, and records of events and fundraising efforts. Material related to various congregations includes bulletins, fliers, correspondence (form letters), photographs, newspaper clippings, and recorded media. The Jewish Genealogy Society records include bulletins, newsletters, and meeting agendas. Also included is a family genealogy.
The Friends of Southern Nevada Libraries Records (1974-2013) is comprised of the organizational records of the Las Vegas, Nevada based non-profit, Friends of Southern Nevada Libraries (FOSNL). Materials include volunteer information, book sale receipts, funding proposals, thank-you cards, board meeting minutes, correspondence, photographs, newsletters, court proceedings, and promotional materials.
The records of Temple Beth Sholom date from 1945 to 2015 and include scrapbooks, photographs, bulletins, meeting minutes, by-laws, correspondence, and publications. The collection contains documentation of the Board of Directors, the Sisterhood, the Men's Club, the history of the congregation, events held by the temple, and construction of the temple building in Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada.
