The Pesach Seder is my favorite time to learn of different family customs that have been passed on from generation to generation. Yet minhagim do not have to be ancient, for new traditions are constantly being created. There is one relatively modern minhag that Riki and I first learned from our friend Rabbi Steve Wernick and his wife Jodi that we found particularly meaningful. Almost eight years ago, Steve and Jodi introduced us to the custom of dipping Challah in honey every Shabbat during one's first year of marriage. I was, of course accustomed to dipping our apples and Challah in honey during Rosh Hashanah, but never before had I seen honey used on Shabbat. The "old" minhag is to dip the Shabbat Challah in salt, reminding us of the Temple service ritual. The idea behind dipping the Challah in honey instead of salt, is that one's "honeymoon" year of marriage should be sweet like honey. Riki and I followed this minhag with great joy every Shabbat during our first year of marriage. During that year, I proudly shared this ritual with as many people as possible because I thought it was such a beautiful concept. Most of our friends responded positively, and many of them adopted the tradition in their homes as well. In fact, Riki's parents liked the idea so much they decided to celebrate their thirtieth anniversary by using honey on their Shabbat Challah for an entire year. But I will never forget the response I received from Rabbi Ron Shulman, one of my mentors, after explaining the minhag to him. He said, "And what about the following years of marriage? Will they not be as sweet?" Thank God, the following four and a half years of our marriage have been as sweet, if not sweeter than the first. But nonetheless, Rabbi Shulman's words continue to ring in my ears. I realized that he was right. Why should one year be any more special than the next? Shouldn't we pray for every year to be sweet? As Rosh Hashanah approaches each year, I t ry to make time for personal reflection. While reflecting, I contemplate ways in which I can make my life more productive, meaningful, and pleasant in the year to come. A few years ago, as a result of our Rosh Hashanah introspection, Riki and I decided to give the honey bear bottle a permanent place on our Shabbat table. We now use honey on our challah every week, thus symbolizing the continuation of our sweet life together. I encourage you to adopt this minhag in your home as well. When you bring out the honey for Rosh Hashanah this year, consider keeping the honey on the table year round. Whether you have been married one year, twenty years or fifty years, it is never too late to celebrate your life together. (Besides, it tastes good too!) Riki, Meital and I wish you all a Shanah Tovah U'metukah-a good and SWEET year! - W W J ^ ^ wmmmm. SEPTEMBER 12TH AT 4 : 0 0 P.M. [ h o p e that all our Midbar families have had a restful, safe and wonderful summer. At the religious school, we have been busy unpacking the remaining boxes that we had left from the move, and preparing for a t e r r i f i c school year. Our staff consists of returning teachers, as well as new instructors joining us t h i s academic year. I am pleased with the knowledge and enthusiasm that each and every one of them will bring into teaching your son or daughter a love of J u d a i sm and the mitzvah of studying Torah. We look forward to a rewarding and successful school year. If you have not yet sent in your p r e - r e g i s t r a t i on and deposit, please do so at once. First semester t u i t i on is required to be paid in full by August 31st. I look forward to seeing how our students have grown over the summer! So, what do you have to look forward to during the year, now that summer is over? USY, of course. Start the school year with old and new friends; and fun! Some of you are new, and we can't wait to meet you! And some of you we know, and miss, and can't wait to see you!
