Stella Champo Iaconis Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Stella Champo Iaconis Photograph Collection (approximately 1890-1950) contains four black-and-white photographic prints of the Helldorado Days celebration held in Las Vegas, Nevada and three photograph albums with family photographs. Included in the albums are images of Italian family members, and Stella and her sister Irene as young children on their family ranch in Southern Nevada in the 1920s and 1930s. The Champo family and other Las Vegas residents are prominently featured in photographs taken across Las Vegas, including at the Boulder Dam (Hoover Dam) dedication, the family's farm, and outside residences near downtown Las Vegas. The third album covers Stella Champo's personal life, with photographs of her first husband, Walter Cordano (married 1934-1942) and her second husband, John Iaconis. Included are trips to Los Angeles, California; Pioche, Ruth, and Goldfield, Nevada; and early downtown Las Vegas, including the Union Pacific Station. A partial inventory is available for the third album.

O'Brien, Eve, 1921-1998

Eve O’Brien was a long time food and beverage director for Sam Boyd at his properties in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born Eva Mae Christensen on September 25, 1921 in Pioche, Nevada to Rose Foster and Erastus Christensen. She was raised by her stepfather, Archie C. Emerick. She married John Cleary and later O’Brien. She died in Bowling Green, Kentucky on March 2, 1998.

Katherine D. Beal interviews truck driver and fireman Wesley Troy Adams (b. 1930) at his home in Henderson, Nevada. Born in Modena, Utah, Adams relocated to Nevada in 1959. Adams discusses LDS church organization and affiliation, celebrations in Caliente, Pioche, and Panaca. Also during the interview, Adams offers insight into raising a family in Southern Nevada, Bottle House in Pittman, atomic testing, and shares his philosophical views on life. Adams wife is also present during the interview.

Unidentified men and women stand in front of a brick building with a sign that reads "L. MULBERRY." A young boy sits to the left. Inscription reads: "Caliente, Nevada. This is the front of the house. We have leased the front room upstairs over the buggy repository to the telephone co. You can see the buggies through the window and the door. These pictures are not good but will give you a general idea of how things look (probably Pioche)."
