Blue Diamond Mine Corporate Records

Abstract

The Blue Diamond Mine Corporate Records (1918-2005) consist of operational and organization records of the gypsum mining and milling operations located in southwest Clark County, Nevada. Materials include operational records related to individual boring sites at the mine; milling operations and statistics; and equipment operations and statistics, including maps, field notebooks, and photographs. There are also daily, weekly, and monthly organizational records related to employee work schedules and safety reports for the mining operations, including accident reports and a safety education training program.

The view of a hauling manganese for the first world war in early Las Vegas, Nevada. The Overland Hotel is visible in the background. Handwritten on the back of the image: "1st world war - hauling mang. - 3 kids to Las Vegas - 300 tons a day." Hand written on a slip of paper included with the image: "3 kids, mine owns included Roq Martin, Bill Ferron, "Chick" Chiapello (lived in LA, wealthy family) & probably others. Deal to purchase during March, 1918, when my mother, Ruth Ferron, was giving birth to me in Los Angeles. She didn't hear from Bill until 3 days after I was born, which did nothing to raise the stock of their new fathers! -Barbara Ferron Doyle."

Abstract

Oral history interview with Alice Woodward conducted by an unnamed interviewer in 1972 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Woodward discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1935 because her husband found a mining job in the state. She talks about her experiences teaching, the mining industry, and camping with her family. Woodward recalls her husband dying of asbestosis and discusses the smog levels in Las Vegas.
