Sadie and Hampton George Papers (MS-00434)

Abstract

The Sadie and Hampton George Papers (1874-1948) consist primarily of the incoming and outgoing correspondence of Sadie Kiel George and her husband, Hampton George, regarding proposed land and mineral rights sales. The collection also includes some personal correspondence, and two of the most significant letters in the collection deal with the deaths of brothers William and Edward Kiel, Sadie's uncles, who were found dead at the Kiel Ranch in October 1900. Also included in the collection are receipts, cancelled checks, tax notices, mining claims, and land deeds.

Biographical / Historical Note

Sadie Kiel George was the granddaughter of Conrad Kiel, one of Las Vegas Valley's earliest pioneers. He owned Kiel Ranch in the 1880s, which was the second oldest ranch in the Las Vegas Valley and one of only two major cattle complexes throughout the 19th century. Sadie Kiel married Hampton E. George and they had a son, Hampton George Jr., who was known as Willard. Hampton George, Sr. passed away in 1907, and Sadie subsequently married W.M. Clayton of Santa Ana, California, sometime in the 1930s.
