On February 26, 1977, collector Harold May interviewed Laura Gentry (born May 1897 in St. Thomas, Nevada) at her cabin in Gold Butte, Nevada. In this interview, Laura Gentry discusses living in St. Thomas and Overton, Nevada. She discusses the development of the Overton and Gold Butte areas of Nevada as well as the people involved in mining in these areas.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Bertha Gresh conducted by Gary Eagleson on November 30, 1974 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Gresh discusses the history of Las Vegas, Nevada. Gresh then talks about mining and offers details surrounding specific mines, such as the Black Hawk Consolidated or Ran [Rand] Mine, the Techatticup Mine, the Wall Street Mine, and the Duncan Mine. Gresh then discusses the early days of Boulder City, Nevada and Henderson, Nevada. She also briefly mentions Block 16.

New Consolidated Mill atop the hill in Goldfield, Nevada. Goldfield mining boomed after 1897 and the town's mining and overall size increased for some time afterwards.

Description

Berlin, Nevada 1905. There is an inscription on the back of the image: "Silver ore was discovered at the site in 1895. In 1898 the Nevada Company purchased the claims, developed the mine and installed a 30 stamp mill. Soon Berlin boasted a population of 250. There was a store, post office and a number of saloons in the area. Mining ceased by 1909 and the mill's machinery was removed in 1947. Today Berlin is a ghost town in a state of "arrested decay" and is part of the Berlin-Ichthyosaur Nevada Satate Park. Berlin's mines produced over $800,000. Don E. Lewis Collection." There is a date stamp: Christmas 1985.

The Charles Kielhofer Letter collection consists of a single photocopy of a letter written by Charles Kielhofer on January 31, 1958 to the Las Vegas, Nevada Review-Journal newspaper to inform them that they credited the wrong person with the establishment of Bullfrog Mine in one of their articles.
