A tribute video to Don English, longtime Las Vegas, Nevada photographer who worked for the Las Vegas News Bureau. Produced for LVCVA by Jim Rose/Laguna Productions. Video begins with a group of people walking around a room, talking amongst themselves. Individuals speak to the camera, thanking Don English for all his work and share memories they have of English, going out to Lake Mead and working together at the News Bureau. Individuals include Kathy Espin, Terry Lindberg, Frank Mitrani, Rick Newman, and many other coworkers and photographers. Video transitions to a speaker sharing a history of Las Vegas while black-and-white video of English shooting celebrities on location at hotels and casinos in the 1950s and 1960s. Others go on to stand and speak about English and his kindness, hard work, and what a wonderful worker he was. Video ends with a thank you to Frank Mitrani for organizing the event and other monthly events; appears to be a gathering of the Las Vegas Media Group that Mitrani co-founded and ran until 2017. Rosenda Gomez oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Rosenda Gomez conducted by Stefani Evans on July 24, 2024 for Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Gomez describes her childhood and youth in General Luna, Surigao del Norte, Philippines. She shares about her family's financial struggles, becoming pen pals and eventually marrying an older American man, moving to Texas, and having a daughter. Desparate to leave an abusive marriage, she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1993 and worked at the El Cortez making change. After working in a number of casinos, including Imperial Palace, Stratosphere, and Sunset Station, she returned to El Cortez in 1998. Gomez describes how she later became more involved in the Culinary Workers Union (Local 226). In this interview, Gomez describes the physical work of cocktail service; the duties of shop steward and the benefits of Union membership. She recalls San Tomas celebrations in her town and annual Philippines Independence Day celebrations at home; her favorite Filipino foods, and Spring Mountain Road as it was when she arrived in 1993. She also recalls anecdotes of Jackie Gaughan, owner of the El Cortez. Digital audio available; no transcript available.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Martin Lopez-Castillo conducted by Nathalie Martinez, Elsa Lopez, and Barbara Tabach on January 11, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Martin Lopez Castillo was born in a small town in the State of Mexico. He immigrated to Phoenix, Arizona in the early '90s where he worked in construction and landscaping. Eventually, he made his way to Colorado where he began working as a cook. He moved to Las Vegas with his family in the early 2000s where he arrived in Las Vegas’ Downtown. He worked in the mine by Primm, Nevada before becoming a gardener. His work has allowed him to see the changes that have happened in Southern Nevada, and he recounts the changes that have happened in Downtown Las Vegas since the 2008 recession. He is a self-taught English speaker and an avid chess collector. Subjects discussed include: Immigration, Chess, Landscaping, Teaching, and Downtown Las Vegas.
