sert luncheon, to be held in the lounge of the women’s apartments Friday afternoon at 2 p. m. Mrs. W. O. McClintock is the chairman of the room mothers group in charge of this party. A box social was announced, for February 20, with Mrs. H. Smith, chairman of committee in charge of this event. The election of a vice-president and treasurer was postponed until the next meeting. Dr. Chauncey Baira of the BMI hospital staff, was introduced as the speaker of the evening. Dr. Baird had been, asked to explain many conditions found in this district and, among other things assured the audience that the epidemic of soTe throats is just that and not caused by sand nor chlorine. Folks are coming here from the coast seeking to escape it there and leaving here for the same reason, he said. There have been no. fatalities here from this. Dr. Baird also assured everyone that the water supply on the Townsite is tested at least every six weeks by a laboratory in Los Angeles, and is found to be perfectly safe. The question many asked here was also answered as to the chlorine1 danger. Dr. Baird explained that while the effect of getting chlorine gas is most discomforting and 5 ‘-tt in ti n ^ in .surface membranes it never causes permanent injury, j After a complete rest of a few • hours the victim is all right again, he said. The same is true of the sand, as it is more irritating to skin and dispositions than anything else, the doctor said. A question and answer period followed Dr. Baird’s talk.
