About the Barrymores
In many ways, the story of John, Ethel, and Lionel Barrymore is the story of contemporary American theatre. To the public, they represented all that was glamorous in stage and cinema indeed, they were, as critics said, “the Royal Family of American Theatre.”
Ethel Barrymore’s career included more than 50 stage performances and scores of films, both silent and sound. One of her more notable screen roles was in the 1932 MGM production of Rasputin and the EMpress; and, in 1944, she won an Academy Award and national acclaim as the heart-warming mother in None But the Lonely Heart.
John Barrymore, “The Great Profile,” was one of the outstanding actors of his time. He gave landmark stage performances in Galesworthy’s Justice, Tolstoy’s Redemption, Benelli’s The Jest, and Shakespeare’s Richard III and Hamlet. He also was ideally suited for the movies, and Hollywood loved him. He starred in many a melodrama, and was cast in such roles as master sleuth Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, swashbuckling Don Juan, and the sinister Svengali.
Lionel Barrymore first gained fame on the American stage, but then devoted his career almost entirely to films and radio. His many classic movie characterizations included Billy Bones in Treasure Island, the mad monk Rasputin, the salty sea captain in The Barrier, the escaped convict in The Devil Doll, and Dr. Gillespie in the popular Dr. Kildare series On radio each Christmas for many years millions heard his voice as miserly Scrooge.
The story of the Barrymores is one of the great successes and tragic declines. During their careers, they collectively earned more than ten million dollars, and yet, they were penniless at the time of their deaths. Through all of their misfortunes, however they remained for years America’s most famous acting family.
“We who play, who entertain for a few years, “ Ethel once cried plaintively, “what can we leave that will last?” Memories.

Appetizers
COLD
BLUE POINT OYSTERS OR CHERRY STONE CLAMS ON THE HALF SHELL
ICELANDIC HERRING
FRUIT COCKTAIL
PINEAPPLE AU KIRSCH
KING CRABMEAT COCKTAIL
JUMBO SHRIMP COCKTAIL
FRESH MELON IN SEASON
HOT
ESCARGOTS BOURGUIGNONNE
OYSTERS ROCKEFELLER
ARTICHOKES MGM
SHRIMPS DE JOHN EN COQUILLE
Soup
TUREEN
BOSTON CLAM CHOWDER
LOBSTER BISQUE A L’AR,AGMAC
CHILLED CREAMY VICHYSSOISE
FRENCH ONION SOUP GRATINEE
Salads
NOBLE CAESAR (FOR TWO)
SPINACH SALAD (FOR TWO)
BARRYMORE SALAD
HEARTS OF BOSTON LETTUCE
SLICED BEEFSTEAK TOMATO
HEARTS OF PALM VINAIGRETTE
MGM DINNER SALAD
The Open Hearth
CHATEAUBRIAND BOUQUETIÈRE
FOR TWO, SAUCE BEARNAISE
The Open Hearth
CHATEAUBRIAND BOUQUETIERE FOR TWO, SAUCE BEARNAISE
ROAST RACK OF LAMB DIALOTIN (FOR TWO)
PEPPER SAUCE, MINT JELLY, BOUQUETIERE
BROILED PRIME NEW YORK SIRLOIN STEAK
FRENCH MUSHROOMS SAUTE
BROILED DOUBLE RIB SPRING LAMB CHOPS
MINT JELLY
HEART OF PRIME FILET MIGNON
FRENCH MUSHROOMS SAUTE
ROAST PRIME RIB OF BEEF AU JUS
YORKSHIRE PUDDING

From Oceans, Lakes & Rivers
MGM MOUNTAIN BROOK BELLE MEUNIERE, WITH CRABMEAT, LEMON AND PARSLEY
COLUMBIA RIVER SALMON STEAK BROILED HOTELIERE OR POACHED HOLLANDAISE
SAUTEED MONTEREY ABALONE STEAK ALGERIENNE IN BROWN LEMON BUTTER WITH CAPERS
WHOLE DOVER SOLE SAUTE HOTELIERE
NUTTY BROWN LEMON BUTTER AND HERBS
PLUMP LOUISIANA FROG LEGS SAUTE PROVENCALE
GOLDEN BROWN, TOMATO CONCASSE
TEMPURA FRIED JUMBO SHRIMP ISLAND STYLE
WITH SOUTH SEA DUCK SAUCE
BAKED STRIPED SEA BASS CALIFORNIA
BUTTER, BAY SHRIMPS AND MUSHROOMS
THE OLD FAVORITE, SWORD FISH STEAK MGM
BAKED TO A GOLDEN BROWN WITH DICED LEMON & CAPERS
HANGMAN’S FRY
OYSTERS, SCALLOPS, SHRIMPS, SOLE AND SALE
ALASKAN KING CRAB A’LA LOUIS
IN RARE WHITE WINE AND GLACAGE
THE KIND: BROILED STUFFED MAINE LOBSTER DRAWN BUTTER
SCHROBSTER EN GLACAGE
CRABMEAT, SHRIMPS, LOBSTER, MUSHROOMS, WINE, HOLLANDAISE IN LOBSTER SHELL
LOBSTER NEWBURG EN CASSEROLE
RICE PILAF AND FLEURONS
BROILED ROCK LOBSTER TAILS
DRAWN BUTTER
ROILED NORTHERN HALIBUT STEAK PORTUGUESE OR GRENOBLOISE
Chef’s Delight
TOURNEDOS OF BEEF DEGUSTATEUR
TWIN FILET MIGNON ON WILD RICE WITH CHANTERELLES , ARTICHOKES AND BEARNAISE
ESCALOPE OF MILK FED VEAL OSCAR
CRABMEAT, ASPARAGUS, SAUCE BEARNAISE
COQ AU VIN CHAMBERTIN
DISJOINTED CHICKEN IN RARE FRENCH WINES
ASSORTED SEAFOODS ON ICE TWO SAUCES
All entrees served with potato and vegetable du jour, coffee, tea or milk
Desserts
BAKED APPLE CHARLOTTE
ASSORTED FRESH FRUIT ON ICE
CHEESE CAKE, FRUIT OR PLAIN
ASSORTED FRENCH PASTRIES
GREEN APPLE PIE WITH BRANDY SAUCE
ASSORTED PETITS FOURS (5)
FRENCH ICE CREAMS AND SHERETS
MEDLEY OF IMPORTED CHEESES AND FRUITS
MGM SPECIAL STRAWBERRIES, GRAND MARNIER, CHANTILLY

Beverages
MGM COFFEE
EXPRESSO
IRISH COFFEE
TEA
MILK
May we suggest a bottle of your favorite wine with dinner
