Abstract

Oral history interview with Vincent Iokimo Souza conducted by Cecilia Winchell and Stefani Evans on June 21, 2022 as part of the Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Souza describes how his early childhood was spent deeply immersed in Hawaiian culture and tradition. He credits his early educators for inspiring his commitment to Hawaiian culture, which he continues to cultivate to this day. Souza earned his degree from the University of Hawaii while also working for a travel company. After college, Souza continued in the travel industry and started his own company in 2002. In 2008, he joined his parents and younger sister in Las Vegas, Nevada. While in Las Vegas, Souza worked for Terry Fator and managed his tours around the world. Souza discusses how he is re-embracing his Hawaiian heritage by engaging in various community activities around the Las Vegas valley. Throughout the interview, Souza touches on many topics ranging from discrimination, to Sam Boyd's connection to Hawaii, and what Souza wants people to know about Hawaii.

Amy Bush Herzer oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Amy Bush Herzer conducted by Barbara Tabach on November 14, 2019 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. Herzer begins the interview discussing her early life, education, and her current job as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) women's golf coach. She speaks about her family's history with golf, her personal history, and life with her husband, Kendall Herzer. After, she recalls where she was on the day of the October 1 shooting, and how she found out about the event, and recalls her husband reported to the main fire station as an Emergency Manager for the State of Nevada. She recalls keeping track of her athletes' whereabouts and letting their families know. Herzer describes how people reacted when she had brought a therapy dog, Apollo, in for the people donating blood and how the community came together to support each other and share resources as a community.

Abstract

Oral history interview with S. J. Johnson conducted by Claytee D. White on May 24, 2016 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Johnson discusses his early life in Indianapolis, Indiana and living on his family's farm. He recalls joining the United States Air Force, adjusting to life outside of the family farm, and experiencing discrimination while serving. Johnson talks about being stationed in Panama, joining the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), and becoming a military officer. Later, Johnson discusses his move to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1982, attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and obtaining his teaching license. Lastly, Johnson talks about the importance of education.

Oral history interview with Megan Neri conducted by Claytee D. White and Stefani Evans on May 20, 2024 for the UNLV Remembers: an Oral History of the 6 December 2023 Shootings project. In this interview, Neri shares her recollections from December 6, 2023. She was working as the Communications Director for Lee Business School and was in Beam Hall when she heard gunshots and screaming. She went to the 5th floor of the building and barricaded in an office with colleagues and students. Neri describes planning events for the Business School and assisting with campuswide commemorations to honor UNLV staff who were murdered that day. Finally, Neri shares how she is slowly recovering from the trauma of the day, and how grateful she is for fellow UNLV colleagues. Digital audio available.
