Voices of the Historic John S. Park Neighborhood Oral History Project

"The John S. Park Neighborhood was the first Las Vegas residential community listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The general boundaries of the John S. Park Historic District are Las Vegas Boulevard and South Ninth Street to the west and east, and Charleston Boulevard and Franklin Avenue to the north and south, respectively. Baby boomers that grew up there include city leaders, county commissioners, and governors.

West Charleston Neighborhoods: an Oral History Project of Ward 1

"Adjacent to the area where the early city’s water supply spewed up from the earth, these neighborhoods have held their charm and housed legends. Well known communities in this area include Artesian Heights, Glen Heather, McNeil, the Palominos, the Ranchos, Scotch Eighties, and Westleigh. Some families can trace generations who live in these neighborhoods. We learn why and begin to understand why these prestigious neighborhoods are now being included in the "new downtown" demographic."

Transcript of interview with Jack Lehman by by Claytee White, October 17, 2007

Date

2007-10-17

Description

Judge Jack Lehman is living the life we should all strive for - a wonderful family, a work ethic that has allowed him to serve others while enjoying a magnificent life and above all a great love affair with his beautiful artistic wife, Lou Lou. From Chemnitz, Germany, at the beginning of the Nazi reign to a prominent citizen of Las Vegas, Lehman lives an extraordinary Las Vegas life. Born in Germany in the late 1920s, Jack and his sister were sent to the United States in 1935 and after a series of living situations including a orphanage in New York, they were adopted by the Lehman family in Lake Arrowhead, California. As a young boy, he wanted to become a lawyer. After a degree from Berkeley, two tours of military duty, a stint in radio broadcasting, and serving as the Director of the Nevada Department of Economic Development, he entered law school at USC. Lehman's career in the legal field began at the largest law firm in the city - Lionel Sawyer and Collins - and then into private practice and on to the bench as a District Court judge appointed by Governor Richard Bryan. In February 2008, he was honored by judges and friends statewide as the founder of Nevada's Adult Criminal Drug Court Program commonly known as "drug court." Washoe County District Judge Peter Breen said it best, "The state is a much better place because of Jack. All those people came back from the abyss of addiction because of Jack."

Transcript of interview with Jacque Dvorak by Barbara Tabach, March 09, 2017

Date

2017-03-09

Description

Jacque Dvorak was born in London, England, in 1944. Two years later, her family immigrated to Canada and then in 1953 they fulfilled their dreams to reside in the United States. The Dvorak family settled in Long Beach, California where Jacque?s brother was born. In 1957, the Dvorak family relocated to Las Vegas when Jacque?s father, Sam, opened a 24-hour barbeque restaurant in Market Town with his brother Harry. While growing up in California, Jacque enjoyed dancing and being on stage. She found herself drawn to performance much like her mother, Irene, who was an entertainer in Great Britain. This enthusiasm served her well in her future retail career which included the opening of the MGM. Jacque attended Las Vegas High School and graduated in 1962. Taking full advantage of being a teenager in Las Vegas, Jacque remembers the days when the need to lock your doors didn't? exist. Though, Jacque describes being keenly aware of being Jewish and forming strong bonds within the Jewish community through BBYO and other Jewish organizations. She also recalls protesting during school prayer recitations in the 1960s. In this interview Jacque gives an insider?s perspective of growing up in Las Vegas and Jewish life in the city. Her stories range from tales of teenage fun to dealing with modern anti-Semitism in Las Vegas to the joy she has found in friendships in the community. Jacque has two children, Harry Fagel and Lisa Sokoloski.
