Who We Are and What We Do
The Las Vegas Coalition was established in 1994. It
is the only coalition of NBLIC in the State of Nevada
and was spearheaded by Theta Theta Omega Chapter,
    Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
We are partners with the Cancer Information Service
(CIS), Nevada Division of Health, Breast and
Cervical Cancer Bureau, Minority Health Professions
Foundation who has helped fund us, as well as a
member of the Western Region NBLIC Coalition.
    The Problem:
The founder and current chair, Dorothy M. Johnson,
RN retired, BSN, became alarmed at the high
incidences and high mortality rates of cancer in Las
Vegas within the African American community and
No-one appeared to be doing anything about it!
    The Solution:
    ♦ Prevention ♦ Early Detection
    ♦ Screening ♦ Treatment

    1/14/97
    Dear Colleague:
The disproportionate incidence of cancer morbidity and medically underserved populations in the United States has been highlighted and targeted toward decreasing the statistical gap among the ethnic populations.
naTthii"1' lead.T8 Te“fdeath in Black Women 35 - 54 »ge and in the past thirty years, there has been a ten percent increase in cancer deaths of African American women and a 66 percent increase in cancer deaths of African American men. In 1995, approximately 120,000 new cancers were predicted to be diasnosed among African Americans.
However, the American Cancer Society reported at a November 14,1996 news conference that recent reports indicate new evidence that meaningful progress s bemg made. While no "magic bullet" has been found, it appears that the recent more favorable trend in mortality is the joint effect of several different cancer control activities.
Public and school health education has been cited as being one of the factors in this latest research report and we want to keep the ball rolling. Prevention must be focused on health education and early detection.
The Las Vegas Coalition of the National Black Leadership on Cancer (NBLIC) Wants to educate in order to promote early screening, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer within the Black Community. We want to give to the general population a working knowledge about chest X-Rays, Cytological examination of brochial secretions for lung cancer, Urine cytologies for bladder

cancer, periodic blood counts for workers exposed to benzene, Liver function studies and scans for liver cancer, Vaginal examination for children of women treated wth DES during pregnancy, mammograns, pap smears, BSE, PBS, and other tools of the trade.
Therefore, we are sponsoring a wellness conference to be held in Las Vegas at The Orleans Hotel and Casino during the period May 30 - June 1,1997. This conference will be known as Nevada’s First African-American Wellness Conference.
Our current contract with the BCCCP Program through the Nevada State Health Department does not allow us to use funds granted for food/meals. Therefore, we need organizations and corporations to underwrite this item. We plan on limiting our conference to approximately one hundred at which time we would offer two lunches, two continental breakfasts and one brunch all free to the participants with no registraton fee. We are hoping some organizations/corporations would help us fund this item through grants or donations so that this conference would be absolutely free to the participants. Hotel accommodations are not included.
We thank you for your generosity and help in this matter.
    • Checks should be made payable to the Las Vegas Coalition, NBLIC and mailed directly to P. 0. Box 34828, Las Vegas, NV 89133.
    Sincerely,
    Planning Committee:
    Martha Wells, B.A.

    HEALTH COMMITTEE REPORT
    1997
TO: Theta Theta Omega, Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
FROM: Dorothy M. Johnson, Chair, NBLIC
    Health Committee Chairman
    HE: Upcoming Activities
At this time, I would like to reactivate the Health Awareness Committee to help plan and implement the upcoming Nevada's First African- American Wellness Conference, at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, 4500 Tropicana, May 30 - June 1,1997 presented by the Las Vegas Coalition, NBLIC in collaboration with Nevada State Health Dept., National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program through Center for Disease Control. Interested sorors are asked to see me before leaving today.
I would like to alert the advisors of AKAteens that they are invited and wil| probably receive scholarships for this affair. Details to be worked out
1 would like to see Lois Ice, Willa White and Kaweeda after the meeting for collaborations.
National Minority Cancer Awareness Week will be celebrated the third week of April. I have been contacted by the Sunrise Hospital with the request of us (NBLIC) partnering with the hospital to present a health program. Negotiations are now in process for this to happen, but I need to know if the sorority is going to physically support us before I go to any strategy meetings. I would ? appreciate a consensus on this. If agreement is reached, I would hope that all sorors would get their family and friends to attend. Is that asking for too much? Free to the public!
I have been nominated to serve on the Steering Committee of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program and expect to visit Carson City sometime this month when officials from CDC, Atlanta will be there.
I have been asked by the NBCCEDP to serve on the planning committee for the First Lady's Health Conference to be held in Mesquite at the Players Casino in October 1997..This will be a three day conference.
Last, but not least, I spoke at Delta Sigma Theta's Health Forum this morning at the W. Las Vegas Library.

On November 20,1997,1 traveled to Houston and participated in the Leadership Conference sponsored by
the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute and the Center for Disease Prevention and Control.
There were anywhere from 165-178 participants in attendance at any given time to formulate policy dealing
with Prostate Cancer in African American Men. The conference ended on Saturday noon after a draft of
tentative policy was compiled. Final draft to be presented at a later date.
We continue to plan for the April 26,1997 Fashion/Show luncheon to be presented in honor of National
    Minority Cancer Awareness Week.
We welcomed Soror Barbara LeBron into our organization and appointed her financial secretary because of her educational background. She will also be serving as our representative to the newly formed partnership , “Community Partners for Better Health”. This is a coalition composed of The American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. American Diabetes Association, Community Health Center, Clark County Health District, Las Vegas Housing Authority, NBLIC and seven black churches.
A designated Sunday for “Health Awareness Sunday” will be announce soon at which time a health message will be delivered in each of the seven churches simultaneously. More information will be forthcoming.
A Christmas Party was held at my house on Wednesday, December 3, which was well attended.
