Elizabeth Harrington Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Elizabeth Harrington Photograph Collection (approximately 1910-1959) is comprised of black-and-white and color photographic prints and negatives. The images primarily depict the Kiwanis Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as the Potosi mine in Nevada. Other images depict early Helldorado parades, airplanes at Anderson Field (Rockwell Field), and First State Bank employees. Also included are images of locations in Las Vegas, including Las Vegas grammar schools, the El Portal Theater, El Rancho Vegas, Fremont Street, Overland Hotel, and the Old Arizona Club. Additional images include portraits of Maude Frazier, Ray Lyman, and Arthur Harrington.

Abstract

The Las Vegas Jazz Society Records (approximately 1975-2003) are comprised of organizational records including meeting agendas, minutes, and membership statistics of the Las Vegas Jazz Society (LVJS). Included in the collection are issues of the LVJS's newsletter Jazz Notes, promotional materials, blank membership applications, correspondence, information on other regional jazz societies, and photographic prints depicting various events and festivals. A portion of this collection documents LVJS's involvement in saving the KUNV 91.5 FM radio station.

Jerry Cade oral history interviews

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Jerry Cade conducted by Dennis McBride on various dates in February, May, June, July, and November of 2003 for the Las Vegas Gay Archives Oral History Project. In these interviews, Cade recalls his early life in Kermit, Texas, his education, his Methodist upbringing, and understanding his sexuality during high school and college. He then talks about traveling to Spain in January 1976 where he met his first romantic partner. Cade then describes moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1981 to work at the Community Health Centers of Southern Nevada. He also discusses other relationships he had since moving to Las Vegas, his political activism, working on the first American Medical Association panel to study AIDS in 1983, and his first AIDS patient in August 29, 1985. Cade then elaborates on the history of AIDS in Las Vegas, AIDS support and advocacy groups in Las Vegas, the public perception of AIDS and the gay community, and the repeal of Nevada's sodomy law.
