Abstract

The Walter Cartier Papers (1962-1998) primarily contain materials collected by Walter Cartier during his time working as company manager of Bal du Moulin Rouge at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada. Materials include posters, show programs, and costume drawings as well as photographs, and slides of the show's opening night performance. Other images in the collection include reference photographs of performers in costumes. Other materials in this collection include show costumes designed by French costume designer, Edward Piekny, various costume designs created by Cartier, and a copy of his curriculum vitae from 1987. Programs for shows performed in 1962 at Casa Mañana Theatre in Fort Worth, Texas are also included in the collection.

Biographical / Historical Note

Walter Mahofski, known professoionally as Walter Cartier, was a professional dancer who performed in shows in Las Vegas, Nevada throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Cartier started out his dancing career as a student of Andrea and Maurice Sabatier at the Andrea School of Dance in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He began his professional career dancing in shows around the world including Casino de Paris in Paris, France and Casino du Liban in Beirut, Lebanon. In Las Vegas, Cartier danced in Lido de Paris at the Stardust Hotel and Hallelujah Hollywood at the MGM Grand Hotel. He danced in stage shows, films, television, and musical theatre before transitioning to company manager roles in the late 1970s. He was company manager and production coordinator for Bal du Moulin Rouge at the Las Vegas Hilton from 1981 to 1986 and director and choreographer for the Flamingo Hotel in 1985.

Cartier passed away on January 20th, 2017 in Las Vegas.
