The Royal Caledonian Asylum was established by the British Society for Extending the Fisheries and Improving the Coasts of the Kingdom in 1815. Its purpose was to support and educate children of soldiers, sailors and marines, natives of Scotland, who have died or have been disabled in service of their country, and those of indigent parents resident in London (Internet Archive).
