Interviewed by Monserrath Hernández, Rodrigo Vazquez, and Laurents Benitez-Bañuelos. A native of Jalisco, Mexico, moved to Las Vegas when he was about 20-year old in 1987. Attended CSN and UNLV. His history with Las Vegas is embedded in the 1980s Las Vegas gay scene and education for AIDS. He is and activist and the Executive Director of Aid for AIDS of Nevada. He and Theodore Small are the first same-sex marriage in Nevada.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. James LaBuda conducted by Rhonda Calvo on November 08, 2004 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, LaBuda reflects upon his more than 20-year career as an elementary and junior high school teacher and administrator with the Clark County School District (CCSD) from the 1980s to the 2000s. He describes the process by which he became a teacher, and eventually a principal, as well as some of the challenges that he faced at different schools. He discusses challenges surrounding cultural diversity, standardized testing, and the 1988 PEPCON explosion. He reflects upon his training that he believes was the most beneficial for his principalship, discusses his approach to educational leadership, and describes expectations that successful principals would commonly face.

Abstract

The Alan Cummings Research Files (1974-2004) are comprised of research files compiled by Cummings, an elementary school teacher for the Clark County School District (CCSD) in Southern Nevada. The files represent Cummings's work to persuade the Teacher's Health Trust, the employee benefit plan for the school district, to consider domestic partnership benefits for CCSD educators and administrators. Materials include personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazines, and court cases.

Oral history interview with Judith Lee Johnson Jones conducted by Claytee D. White on February 22, 2007 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Johnson Jones discusses winning a contest that allowed her to be a showgirl at the Sands Hotel and Casino when she was seventeen, receiving a college degree in Houston, Texas, and performing in the Elvis movie “Viva Las Vegas.” She also talks about her twenty-nine-year career in education.
