Abstract

Collection consists of an original manuscript, "Geology and Ore-Deposition at Tonopah, Nevada" by Josiah Edward Spurr (1870-1950) with hand-drawn diagrams, and letters discussing the donation of the manuscript. The manuscript, which was published in the journal Economic Geology in 1915, is a geological description of the Tonopah mining area; the Tonopah Mining Company is mentioned frequently. It is undated, but the publication date suggests it was written approximately 1913-1915.

Abstract

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 Las Vegas, Nevada Photographs document various activities of the Culinary Union, from the 1950s to 2006, with the bulk of the material documenting the 1990s. Prominently featured in the collection are various strikes, pickets, marches, parades, rallies, and demonstrations from the late 1980s to early 2000s. A large portion of these photographs documents the Frontier Strike of the 1990s. Also included are photographs of press conferences, political rallies, internal committee meetings, Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees (H.E.R.E.) conventions, and various social events. Materials contain photographic prints, photographic negatives, and a small number of slides.

Description

Marquee of the Hotel Sahara's 6th Annual Invitational $77,777.77 Golf Tournament, October 15-20 at the Paradise Valley Country Club. A smaller arrow-shaped marquee says "Welcome British Ryder Team". A sign for the Holiday Hotel is visible in the background. The Sahara Invitational was a PGA Tour event that was played in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1958 to 1976. From 1958 to 1961 it was called the Sahara Pro-Am and was not an official PGA Tour event. It was played at the Paradise Valley Country Club from 1962-1968 and from 1970-1971; and at the Sahara Valley Country Club (also referenced as the Sahara Nevada Country Club) in 1969 and from 1973-1976. The Sahara Hotel sponsored the tournament. Two tournaments were won here on October 20th, with the first tournament being won on October 20, 1963 by Jack William "The Golden Bear" Nicklaus with a final score of 276 over second place finisher Arnold Palmer, who shot a total of 285. Juan Antonio "Chi-Chi" Rodriguez won the second tournament on October 20, 1968 with a final score of 274, besting Dale Dwight Douglass, who tied with him at 274, in a sudden death playoff to take the title. Once owned by Howard Hughes, the Golf Club was re-named the Wildhorse Golf Club in 1994. The golf club is located at 2100 W. Warm Springs Road, Henderson, Nevada.

Description

On March 1st, 1976, Suzan DiFederico interviewed Jack Herst (born in 1943 in Las Vegas, Nevada) in his home on 3221 La Mirada Street, Las Vegas, Nevada. During the interview, DiFederico does not speak; rather, Herst appears to read and answer questions aloud from “DiFederico’s dossier.” Herst talks about the population growth in Nevada and emphasizes the significant changes Las Vegas has experienced from its origins as a small town. Herst also discusses his personal family history, his Jewish identity and community affiliations, as well as his employment history as a dealer and broker at different casinos.
