Description

With the explosive growth of the Las Vegas Valley over the past 30 years, it is rare to find someone who has deep battle born roots that go back to the early mining days of Nevada. Nancy Cummings-Schmidt is an example of that rare kind of gem. As a fourth generation Nevadan, her family came to the state in the 1800s form Ireland and England. Looking to capitalize off of the mining boom in Virginia City, they transitioned to ranching. She spent her first years in Reno and when her father went off to fight in the Second World War, her mother moved to Herlong, California and sent her to live with her grandparents. Upon moving to Vegas for fourth grade, her mother remarried and worked for the Las Vegas Sun while Nancy attended the Fifth Street Grammar School and later became a member Las Vegas High School’s first graduating class in 1956. On March 21, 1978, collector Dennis Luppens interviewed Louise LeClair (born July 28th, 1910 in Mesquite, Nevada) at her home in Las Vegas, Nevada. In this interview, Mrs. LeClair discusses her family history and education in Las Vegas, Nevada. She also discusses healthcare and talks about the flu epidemic of 1918 and how it affected Southern Nevada.

Abstract

This is part 6 of 6 finding aids for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Creative Services Records (1959-2016). Generally, materials are transferred from UNLV Photo Services to UNLV Special Collections and Archives 5 years after they are created. For materials within the last 5 years, contact photo@unlv.edu or call 702-895-3036. This finding aid contains the thematic slides, contact sheets, and audiovisual materials taken and used by UNLV Creative Services for publicity and promotional purposes from approximately 1959 to 2009. The majority of the materials consist of images from various academic departments, athletics, buildings and historical views of campus, as well as faculty and student life. Also included in the collection are an assortment of print materials, such as theater and music programs, as well as audio cassettes and film reels from anniversary events around campus.
