Description

Per patron comment, this was the 200 block of West Main Street with Beatty Mountain in the background, but it is currently a vacant lot.
Caption: Remnant of other days in Beatty. Abandoned saloons. During the boom of 1906, Beatty boasted a population of 1,000. There were 26 saloons. In 1918, only 2 remained to close their doors.

Description

Caption: Abandoned shacks in Rhyolite, Nev. Called the Ghost City. During the Gold Rush in 1906-7, Rhyolite had a population of 5,000. It is said that people had to elbow their way through the streets. Many substantial buildings were erected, some of which still stand dismantled of everything portable. At the beginning of 1920, Rhyolite is deserted with the exception of four persons.

In the center of the photograph is the California Hotel. The white two story building, farthest on the right side is reported to be The Exchange Club. It was established in 1906 and still stands. The Beatty Laundry building is on the left side of the photograph.
