Frank D. Rathbun Archaeology Papers

Abstract

The Frank D. Rathbun Archaeology Papers (1918-1983) consist of photographs, field note books and sketchbooks reflecting Rathbun's interest in petroglyphs throughout Nevada, Arizona, and California. The materials also include high school yearbooks, school term papers, scrapbooks, postcards, and memos pertaining to Native American history, water projects, and engineering topics. Additionally included is an unpublished report of an archaeological survey of the petroglyph sites identified by Rathbun, conducted in 1968 by Michael Moen.

Abstract

The Joan Kane Collection of Casino Training Manuals (approximately 1980-1999) contains various human resource training manuals for Atlantic City, New Jersey properties (Playboy Casino, Atlantis, Golden Nugget), Las Vegas, Nevada properties (Fremont Casino, Stratosphere, New York New York, Planet Hollywood) Circus Circus in Mississippi, and various riverboat gaming locales. Of note is a the Playboy Bunny club training manual, UNLV gaming training workshop, and some general manuals related to how to respond to potential labor strikes.

Abstract

The UNLV University Libraries Collection on Goldfield, Nevada Collection dates from 1906 to 2009, with the bulk dating from 1906 to 1917 and documents the mining, business, and civic history of Goldfield, Nevada. Items in the collection include a program from the Nelson-Gans boxing match, a letter from H. M. Yerington describing the miners' strike, mine prospectuses, and minutes from the Goldfield Woman's Club.

Abstract

The Samoset Chapter of the Colonial Dames XVII Century Records (1970-2022) consist of scrapbooks, volumes of meeting minutes and treasurer’s reports, and National Colonial Heritage Month proclamations from cities throughout Nevada. The materials document the Samoset (Las Vegas) Chapter’s activities, including chapter meetings, community service and events, gifts and scholarships, national and state conferences, and the chapter’s work to place a historic marker at Callville Bay, Lake Mead, Nevada.

Syphus-Bunker Papers

Abstract

The Syphus-Bunker Papers date from 1891 to 1994, with the majority of the collection consisting of correspondence between Mary Etta Syphus and John Mathieson Bunker from 1891 to 1895. The collection also contains correspondence from friends and relatives, and documentation related to Mary Etta Syphus' attendance at Brigham Young Academy Church Normal Training School. Other materials include family history information and two color photographs of family homes. The collection also includes typed transcripts of the correspondence.

On March 15, 1978, Bruce Eubank interviewed Rosina Goodwin (born 1918 in Sweet Springs, Missouri) about her life in Las Vegas, Nevada. Goodwin first talks about her family background before discussing the Las Vegas Strip, the Stewart Ranch, and Twin Lakes. She also talks about schools, Boulder Dam, the atomic testing, and her work as a telephone operator. The latter part of the interview includes discussion on changes in Las Vegas, the Helldorado Parade, and changes in weather.
