The Joan Kane Collection of Casino Training Manuals (approximately 1980-1999) contains various human resource training manuals for Atlantic City, New Jersey properties (Playboy Casino, Atlantis, Golden Nugget), Las Vegas, Nevada properties (Fremont Casino, Stratosphere, New York New York, Planet Hollywood) Circus Circus in Mississippi, and various riverboat gaming locales. Of note is a the Playboy Bunny club training manual, UNLV gaming training workshop, and some general manuals related to how to respond to potential labor strikes.

Biographical / Historical Note

Joan Kane is a long-time human resources professional who has worked in a number of casinos across the United States throughout her career. Kane was the opening training manager for a number of casino properties in Atlantic City, New Jersey, including Golden Nugget, Playboy Casino, and Atlantis Casino. In Las Vegas, Nevada, she worked at the Fremont Casino and acted as consultant for Circus Circus Enterprises, Inc. Kane later moved to Tunica, Mississippi and Chalmette, Louisiana were she continued to work in the gaming and hospitality industries. She was also an independent consultant and opened Ark Restauraunts, including the New York New York Casino in Las Vegas. Her last position in gaming was as Director of Human Resources at the opening of the Stratosphere. She eventually transitioned to healthcare in Las Vegas in 1999, and is currently Labor Relations COE at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and Sunrise Children's Hospital.

In 2024, Sarah Jones accessioned the collection, rehoused the materials out of binders and into folders, reboxed the collection, and created the finding aid in ArchivesSpace.

Appraisal Note

Acquired by Su Kim Chung, curator, as part of UNLV Special Collections and Archives holdings in Southern hospitality and gaming. The original acquisition included 5.42 linear feet of general hospitality material were reviewed by Su Kim Chung, Aaron Mayes, and the liason librarian, determined out of scope, and discarded per donor agreement.
