The Josephine Johnson Foster Photograph Collection depicts the Manor, Howard, Johnson, and Foster families in Nevada from approximately 1906 to 1946. The William Hillman Shockley Photograph Collection (1875-1925, 1951) contains black-and-white photographs documenting mining operations at the Mount Diablo Mine and Millworks in Candelaria, Nevada. It also includes photographs of nearby operations including the Northern Belle Mine and the Princess Mill. The collection contains photographs of Shockley, his son, William Bradford Shockley, as an infant, as well as images of Shockley’s brothers, Walter A. Shockley and George Shockley.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Reed Phelps conducted by Kim Geary on November 02, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Phelps discusses his career working on the railroads in Nevada and California before moving to Blue Diamond, Nevada to work as a miner. Phelps describes life as a miner in Blue Diamond and the town's history. Phelps also discusses changes that occurred in the town after the Flintkote Company took over the mining operation.

Abstract

The Blue Diamond Mine Corporate Records (1918-2005) consist of operational and organization records of the gypsum mining and milling operations located in southwest Clark County, Nevada. Materials include operational records related to individual boring sites at the mine; milling operations and statistics; and equipment operations and statistics, including maps, field notebooks, and photographs. There are also daily, weekly, and monthly organizational records related to employee work schedules and safety reports for the mining operations, including accident reports and a safety education training program.

Oral history interview with Alice Woodward conducted by an unnamed interviewer in 1972 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Woodward discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1935 because her husband found a mining job in the state. She talks about her experiences teaching, the mining industry, and camping with her family. Woodward recalls her husband dying of asbestosis and discusses the smog levels in Las Vegas.
