Oral history interview with Kate Torres-Recto conducted by Ayrton Yamaguchi and Cecilia Winchell on April 23, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.

Kate discusses her aristocratic upbringing with her family in the Philippines and the values her parents instilled in her. She discusses her life in the United States and how she has raised her six children with those same values. Kate talks about her philanthropic work and the political causes she supports related to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. She also shares details of her entrepreneurial pursuits in solar power, telecommunications, cyber security, and as the founder and owner of Kate's Koffee in Las Vegas.

Abstract

The Association of Women in Science, Las Vegas, Nevada Chapter Records date from 1976 to 1999 and cover DeLyle Eastwood's effort to create a local chapter of the Association of Women in Science (AWIS), the completion of this goal, and the proceedings of the Las Vegas AWIS chapter. The mission of the chapter was to help women in science career fields, both in the industry and university setting, achieve success in their fields. The AWIS also held seminars to spark early interest in science for young girls. The collection contains chapter correspondence, newsletters, and mentoring materials.

Abstract

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Las Vegas Records (1998-2022) contain materials related to AIGA Las Vegas Chapter including board meeting agendas and minutes, financial records, and annual reports. The majority of the collection consists of annual design competition materials (referred to as "Peep Shows" until 2003 when it changed to "Work Shows"), which include invitations, marketing material, and program books. Also contained in the collection are event posters, national design competition materials, and AIGA annual design books and journals. The majority of the collection focuses on AIGA Las Vegas events.

Bohn-Bettoni Menu Collection

Abstract

The Bohn-Bettoni Menu Collection contains menus dating from 1854 to 1939 from restaurants around the world that were collected by Henry J. Bohn, including a large number of international menus gathered into a single scrapbook by Henri Bettoni, manager of the Globe Restaurant in London, England. The collection contains menus from hotel restaurants located primarily on the eastern coast of the United States, but also contains menus from Western states such as Montana, Colorado, Washington, and California. Stretching well in the first three decades of the 20th century, the menus in the Bohn-Bettoni collection showcase the evolving nature of American and European cuisine.

The Evelyn Stuckey Papers date from 1940 to 1972 and document Stuckey's experience as a physical education teacher at Las Vegas High School (LVHS) in Las Vegas, Nevada and founder of the LVHS Rhythmettes dance group. The collection contains personal and educational materials from Stuckey’s college years, personal correspondence, and photographs. It also contains materials documenting the Rhythmettes' activities including travel plans, posters and fliers, news clippings, and group rosters.

The Corbin Harney Nevada Test Site Protest Photograph Albums (1995-1997) are comprised of three photograph albums documenting the life and spiritual, environmental, and political activism work of Corbin Harney, elder and spiritual leader of the Newe ("the People") Western Shoshoni Indians. The majority of the photographs are focused on the anti-nuclear protest demonstrations by the Shundahai Network at the Nevada Test Site during the 1990s.

Clark County Economic Opportunity Board Records

Abstract

The Clark County Economic Opportunity Board (CCEOB), (1962-1973) was the regional legal body responsible for receiving and administering funds in Las Vegas, Nevada allocated under the Economic Opportunity Act, a part of the Johnson's Administration's War on Poverty Program. The collection concentrates on the high funding years from 1965 until the early 1970s, when the CCEOB disbursed funds to a variety of community action programs and organizations. Records are administration and project oriented and include meeting minutes, correspondence, financial and committee reports, personnel policies, job descriptions, funding information, appointments, program officer listings, as well as project applications and program descriptions.
