Abstract

Oral history interview with Rona and David Mendelson conducted by Barbara Tabach on April 26, 2016 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Rona and David Mendelson describe moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1973 as a married couple and how they became board members of Congregation Ner Tamid, which led them to getting involved with the small and growing Jewish community. They discuss their activities and their current family ties within the Jewish community in Las Vegas. As educators, they also delve into their experiences with the school system in Southern Nevada and the discrimination they faced as Jewish educators and parents.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Jessica Hutchings conducted by Barbara Tabach on March 21, 2018 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. In this interview, Jessica Hutchings discusses her experience flying to Las Vegas, Nevada on the night of the October 1, 2017 mass shooting. She speaks of her flight's detour to Phoenix, Arizona, and her discovery of the shooting. Hutchings explains how Congregation Ner Tamid, where she is a cantor, contributed to the community healing after the tragedy, including their organization of vigils, a music fundraiser called "Vegas Strong in Song," and discussing the event with teenage Hebrew School students who had questions and concerns about the shooting.

This series is comprised of records created by congregations and other organizations in the Las Vegas, Nevada Jewish community from 1988 to 2004. In addition to newsletters from various congregations in the Las Vegas Valley and the Holocaust Survivors Group of Southern Nevada, the series also includes form letters, fliers, programs, invitations, photographs, audiovisual materials, and other ephemera documenting the events and activities of the Jewish community.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Renee Diamond conducted by Barbara Tabach on November 20, 2014 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Renee Diamond discusses coming to Las Vegas, Nevada via Los Angeles, California with her husband and children in the 1970s and getting involved in politics. She talks about her husband, Leo, and his business selling vinyl records in L.A., and her work in a doctor's office. Once in Las Vegas, the Diamonds joined Temple Beth Sholom and later Congregation Ner Tamid. Diamond also talks about her involvement in the political arena in southern Nevada, including the League of Women Voters.

Oral history interview with Rabbi Mel Hecht conducted by Barbara Tabach on March 17, 2016 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Hecht discusses being a Rabbi in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1980. He also talks about his involvement in the Engelstad event at Imperial Palace Hotel, where the gaming board claimed that Ralph Engelstad glorified the image of Hitler and the Third Reich on the Las Vegas Strip.
