Abstract

Oral history interview with Ron Donoho conducted by Craig Brenner on February 28, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Donoho discusses the history of sheriffs in the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Donoho mentions various sheriffs that were his colleagues and the political dynamics during their leaderships. He also recalls a list of Southern Nevada police officers killed in the line of duty.

On November 1, 1974, collector James M. Greene, interviewed widow and mine leaser, Bertha Gresh (born August 29th, 1883, in Cedarburg, Wisconsin) in her home in Nelson, Nevada. This interview covers early mining days, Bertha’s personal history, and the history of Nelson County. She also discusses her art, social activities, and the prizes she won as a visual artist in Nevada.

Description

Las Vegas Mayor E. W. Cragin asked that the Las Vegas Land and Water Company extend pipelines for fire protection down the Strip. Bennett had the opinion that the company could not be legally compelled to do it, and the newly formed water district was a more logical source of water.

Atlas page numbers in upper margin: 67-68. Primer meridians: Greenwich and Washington, D.C. On verso: History and statistical view of the West India islands or Columbian Archipelago and Historical and statistical view of Mexico and Central America. Shows proposed railroads, locations of Indian tribes, natural features, counties, mines, mail routes, trails and routes of exploring expeditions. Has decorative border. Southern part of Nevada was added to the state in 1867 and is part of Nevada on this map, but Lincoln County was established in 1867 and is not on this map. This map was still probably published in 1867 in spite of someone's having written "1864" in pencil in the lower right corner of the Library's copy. Original publisher: A.J. Johnson.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Betty Ham Dokter conducted by Roger Jablonski on February 27, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Dokter describes church activity and the first casino properties that were built. She later talks about presidential visits, economic changes in Nevada, and the construction of Hoover Dam. The latter part of the interview covers the topics of racial minorities, as well as social and environmental changes.
