Description

A scrapbook for "Universal Warning Sign: Yucca Mountain," an international competition to create a warning sign for the proposed nuclear waste facility at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Abstract

The Ruthadele Stearns Doyle Lathrop Personal Papers (1900s-1991) contains scrapbooks, slides, and matted competition photographs created by Ruthadele Stearns Doyle Lathrop, a photographer and ballroom dancer. The scrapbooks include photographs of Ruthadele’s family, travels, and ballroom dance competitions, as well as newspaper clippings and other ephemera. The slides and matted photographs consist mostly of Western landscape scenes, including California and Nevada.

Abstract

The Ortiz Family Collection on the Las Vegas 51s Baseball Team consists of programs, baseball cards, posters, newspaper clippings, and seasonal media guides from 1983 to 2010. The bulk of material is from 1983-2000, when the Las Vegas Stars franchise was affiliated with the San Diego Padres. In 1983, a Pacific Coast Minor League franchise moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, and became the Las Vegas Stars. The team was an affiliate of the San Diego Padres from 1983 to 2000, and in 2001 the name changed to the Las Vegas 51s. The team was then affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2001-2008), the Toronto Blue Jays (2009-2012), and the New York Mets (2013-2018). Now the Las Vegas Aviators, the team is affliated with the Oakland A's (2019-present).

The Felicia Campbell Papers (approximately 1962-2020) contains material documenting the life and work of long-time UNLV English professor, Felicia Campbell. Materials include Campbell's personal and professional papers including correspondence, scholarly journals featuring her published articles, article drafts, newspaper clippings, photographs, personal diaries, and awards. Also included are materials documenting Campbell's discrimination lawsuit against UNLV in the 1970s regarding equal pay for tenured female faculty.

The Taylor Construction Company Collection (1954-1973) consists primarily of publicly distributed information and provides a glimpse of some of the hotels, housing, public buildings, and remodeling projects handled by the company. It contains two booklets on the construction projects of the company from 1954 to 1972. It also includes Las Vegas International Hotel's projected revenues from 1969 to 1973, a newspaper article on Taylor Construction Company projects in Florida, and an invitation to the groundbreaking ceremony for the MGM Grand Hotel.

Squires, Charles P. (Charles Pember), 1865-1958

Charles Pember “Pop” Squires was a prominent newspaper editor and publisher in Las Vegas, Nevada. He moved to Las Vegas with his wife Delphine Anderson Squires in 1905 and they participated in the town site’s original land auction that same year. Along with several business partners, Squires opened a bank, a hotel, and an electric company. In 1908 he purchased the Las Vegas Age, one of Las Vegas’s original newspapers. He owned and operated the paper until 1943 when the Las Vegas Review-Journal purchased the Age.

The Mike Smith Editorial Cartoons (1980-2023) contain editorial cartoons created by Las Vegas, Nevada based cartoonist Mike Smith for the Las Vegas Sun newspaper. Materials include Smith's editorial cartoons on NASCAR and a copy of his 2003 book StockcarToons. The collection also includes Smith's personal sketchbooks and letters from fans.
