Abstract

The collection is comprised of the personal, professional and business papers of Dr. Juanita Greer White from 1927 to 1980. Included are correspondence, booklets, dissertations, minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and various other materials linked to women's organizations and Nevada organizations relating to education, health, and aging. Other material includes documents from her work in the Nevada State Legislature, books, catalogs, chemistry papers, plaques, and campaign materials.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into four series and 12 sub-series:

Series 1. General, 1929-1979;

Series 2. Medical, 1943-1978;

Series 3. Education, 1952-1981;

Series 4. Political, 1962-1976.

The collection is arranged in rough alphabetical order and has one file in the General Series that contains plaques and an over-sized envelope with awards and certificates.

Biographical / Historical Note

Pioneer chemist, legislator, Nevada Regent, and educator Juanita Greer White was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 19, 1905. She received her A.B. in General Chemistry from Agnes Scott College in 1926 and her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 1929. Between 1924 and 1952, White taught in various colleges while also working on a special project on Adsorption at Johns Hopkins and was a research chemist for Bell Telephone Laboratories and the Deluxe Laboratories of 20th Century Fox.

Following a residence in Millbrook, New York, she and her husband, Dr. Thomas Sherman White, moved to Boulder City, Nevada. She was associated with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) from 1928 and became very active in the Boulder City branch. She was elected to the Nevada Board of Regents, serving from 1963 to 1967, and was appointed the Nevada Commissioner for the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and Co-chair for the Committee on Educational Compact. She was a member of the Governor's Commission on Status of Women, and served in the Nevada legislature as an Assemblywoman. Juanita White was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi and received many honors and was recognized in the Who's Who of American Women.

Her activities were numerous on a local and state level including being Nevada's delegate to the National Convention for ten years. Within Clark County she served on the Advisory Board for Youth Centers, the Clark County Mental Health Board, the Committee on Aging, and the "Operation Independence" Advisory Board. Her constant involvement and dedication to higher education led to the honor of having a building named after her on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 1976, the Juanita Greer White Life Sciences building. Juanita Greer White on passed away on September 18, 1997 and was memorialized in the Nevada State Legislature for leaving an indelible mark on public education in the State of Nevada.
