Oral history interview with José Luis Gutiérrez conducted by Maribel Estrada Calderón and Barbara Tabach on October 1, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Also present during this interview is José's close friend Sergio Salgado, who was interviewed separately for the Latinx Voices project in 2018. José discusses his early life growing up in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and his migration to Tijuana and then Santa Barbara, California as a teenager. He talks about his restaurant employment history both in California and in Las Vegas, including his time working at the Jolly Parrot, the Dunes Hotel and Casino, and his own eatery: Tortilleria Los Arcos. Description provided with image: "Naval Reserves Officer Training Corps Midshipman third class William L. Sweet, University of Southern California, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles L. Sweet of 519 New Mexico St., Boulder City, Nevada. Sweet operates the anchor windlass on board the USS Missouri during the current midshipmen cruise. The midshipmen are receiving instruction and "on-the-job" training in communications, navigation, gunnery, operations, and engineering during the four-week summer training cruise which will visit New York, Panama, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There are 765 college students now aboard the MISSOURI studying to become future naval officers under the Holloway Plan. Upon returning to Norfolk, Virginia on September 3, the Midshipmen will depart for their homes to prepare for entering the forthcoming college term August 1951."

Garside, Sherwin (Scoop)

Journalist and photographer Sherwin "Scoop" Garside was born in Tonopah, Nevada in 1915. He was the son of Frank Garside owner of many newspapers, including the Las Vegas Review which became the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 1929. Sherwin Garside moved to Las Vegas, Nevada when his father purchased the Las Vegas Review in 1926. Garside graduated from Las Vegas High School where he earned the nickname "Scoop" writing for the school newspaper, The Desert Breeze.

Mulroy, Patricia

Patricia Mulroy was born in Frankfurt, Germany on February 24, 1953. As a young girl, she lived in several different countries, but always felt that the United States was her home. Her experiences abroad led her to develop a fascination with government work and state service. She arrived in Nevada in 1974 to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In 1989, Mulroy became the general manager of the Las Vegas Valley Water District. She entered the field at a tumultuous time, facing the drought of the Colorado River and tension within the districts.
