Oral history interview with Dean Otteson conducted by Felicia McCabe on November 04, 2008 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Otteson reflects upon his experiences as a teacher and administrator in Alaska and with the Department of Defense Dependent Schools. He discusses his experiences working with vocational training, working with assistant principals, and challenges that he faced.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Ruth Fyfe, K. Oscar Knudson, and Fern Olive oral conducted by Susan Kendall on March 22, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. The three interviewees discuss their early experiences teaching in Las Vegas, Nevada elementary schools beginning between 1924 and 1926. Topics the interviewees discuss include interstate school sports events, physical education for girls, sports for girls, teacher shortages, and school overcrowding. They also discuss illegal gambling in Las Vegas, Nevada prior to 1931, as well as Fremont Street casino and bar development in relation to the Las Vegas Grammar School (currently known as the Historic Fifth Street School) and the Las Vegas High School (currently known as Las Vegas Academy of the Arts) after Nevada legalized gambling.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Susan Tsukamoto conducted by Claudine Robinson on October 18, 2007 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Tsukamoto reflects upon her 33-year career as a teacher and administrator with Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). Having returned to work after retiring, she notes trends and changes that she has witnessed with standardized testing, curriculum development, and programs such as No Child Left Behind. She also reflects upon her experience as a principal, her biggest accomplishments and challenges, and her working relationships with parents, teachers, and students.

Abstract

The Mabel Hoggard Papers (1903-2011) contain materials related to Hoggard's career as a Las Vegas, Nevada elementary school teacher, her research and civic interests in Las Vegas's predominantly African American Westside communities, and her engagement with civil rights issues. The collection also contains materials about Hoggard's life, including biographical newspaper articles about her childhood, education, work, and family. The collection includes lesson plans, scrapbooks, awards, correspondence, photographs, and physical objects such as a vinyl record and political pins. The bulk of the collection focuses on her life in Las Vegas from approximately 1946-1989.

Oral history interview with Lucile Nyberg conducted by Alison Hartough on February 22, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Nyberg discusses the history of Overton, Nevada and life in the town. Nyberg describes early Las Vegas, Nevada and life in Boulder City, Nevada. Nyberg goes on to discuss her career as a teacher and the changes made to education in Las Vegas. Nyberg also discusses the development and the economy of Las Vegas, and briefly discusses prostitution in the city. Nyberg's husband, Richard Nyberg, is present during the interview, but does not speak.
