Year of Human Rights in Nevada 11 ? The Governor's proclamation, presented re-cently to educators and local dignitaries, notes that the subject of human rights i.$ of 11 highest priority to all of us 11 and the "the need for awareness of human conditions is paramount 11 ? In conjunction with the designation of Human Rights Year, a number of educational projects are planned throughout the year for Clark County students. Activities will include observance of the January birthday of Dr. Martin Luther Ki rig, Jr., followed by a February 11 Festival of Student Expression 11 which features a. high school talent show and discussion of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement by poet Nikki Giovanni. A Holocaust Conference for Students is slated for March, which will fea-ture actor-singer Robert Clary, a Holocaust survivorJas keynote speaker, as well as a series of workshops. An essay contest will also be sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, on a theme of 11 The Holocaust and Human Rights 11 ? An estimated 250 students are expected t' o participate in an April con-ference focusing on 11 A Close-up on Victims Rights 11 ? The event will feature .. -more- , HUMAN RIGHTS PROCLAIMED/ 2 national speakers and workshops, through cooperative efforts of Clark County District Attorney Robert Miller and the Close Up Foundation. "Living in the Nuclear Age" is the theme of a second conference slated for April at Virgin Valley High School, for students from small schools in --- - Southern Nevada---a:rid Southern Utah. Workshops are planned for presentations of both sides of the nuclear issue. Next fall, the fourth annual Close Up trip to Washington is being planned for some 200 students and teachers, who will spend a week during November study-ing federal government and laws. -30-
