On February 23, 1977, collector Mark E. French interviewed local farmer, Francis E. Hughes (born March 9th, 1917 in Mesquite, Nevada) in his home in Mesquite, Nevada. This interview offers an overview of the general lifestyle and culture in Mesquite. Mr. Hughes mother, Orilla Leavitt, was born in Bunkerville, Nevada. Members of Mr. Hughes’s family were amongst the first settlers in the Mesquite area.

Description

On March 3, 1979, William Hawley interviewed Oliver Crickman (born 1933 in Apex, North Carolina) about his experiences from living in Nevada and working in restaurants. Crickman first describes his background and his first occupations prior to starting as a cook in Las Vegas restaurants. He then explains how he gradually moved from the position of cook’s helper to sous chef and his then-current position of executive chef at the Royal Inn. Crickman goes into detail about the operation of those restaurants and other Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas properties, and he describes the demographics of cooks as well as how the hospitality industry has changed over time. The latter part of the interview involves a discussion of Crickman’s various residences in Las Vegas over time, the extent of crime, the first places to shop, and a brief discussion on mobile homes.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Michael Kinnaird conducted by Erika Wagstaff on November 17, 2006 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Kinnaird reflects upon his nearly 30-year career with the Clark County School District (CCSD) as a middle and high school administrator from the 1970s to the early 2000s. He describes his upbringing and early experiences that led to his pursuit of school administration, and challenges that he faced as an administrator. He discusses challenges surrounding student diversity, and comments on the overall diversity of CCSD.
