Abstract

The collection is comprised of captured websites and Twitter data related to the mass shooting that occured at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 1, 2017. Captured websites are primarily comprised of articles and news stories from local, national, and international news media outlets. Websites were captured periodically from 2017 to 2018. The collection also includes Twitter data associated with the October 1 shooting that were captured via concurrent queries to the Twitter API for all Tweets containing the term “vegas” occuring September 29, 2017 to October 7, 2017. Also included are files containing tutorials for how to curate and analyze Twitter data which reference the 1 October Twitter dataset for illustrative purposes.

Scope and Contents

The government records series, from 1944 to 2004, include atomic testing schedules, detonation reports and ship's log books for Bikini Islands and Marshall Islands and detailed material on the Nevada Test Site (NTS) operations. The NTS information includes underground nuclear test census information from Reynolds Electric and Engineering Company (REECo), the main government contractor for the site. The NTS and general reports are comprised of fallout reactions to the environment and in ground personnel, contamination estimates, analysis of information, and legislative actions.

Hernstadt, William H.

William H. Hernstadt served as a Nevada state senator from 1977 to 1984 and was owner and general manager of the Las Vegas television station KVVU TV 5 during the early 1970s. He also served as president of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas from 1981 to 1982. Hernstadt graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York with a degree in physics in 1957.

Wouters, L. F. (Louis Francis), 1921-

Louis Francis Wouters was born on October 29, 1921, in Antwerp, Belgium. His family moved to California in 1930. Louis married Gladys C. on March 14, 1982. Gladys had three children: Glenn, Clark, and Amy.

He attended school the University of California, Berkeley. Wouters obtained a bachelor of arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1942. He then earns his doctor of philosophy degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1952.

Salton, Charles, 1922-2004

Charles Salton was born June 19, 1922 in Morristown, New Jersey to Rebecca and Al Salton. The family moved to Huntington Beach, California for two years before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1929. Salton was very active in the Southern Nevada Jewish community. He held careers as an engineer draftsman, insurance agent, and a real estate broker. He was also an income tax enrollment agent and one of the original members of Temple Beth Shalom. Salton passed away April 11, 2004.

Brewster, Allen, 1921-2009

Allen Brewster (1921-2009) was the founder of King David Mortuary in Las Vegas, Nevada. Born in Yonkers, New York, Brewster grew up during the Great Depression and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. An executive at Palm Mortuary since 1978, he recognized the need for traditional Jewish burial services and helped to develop Las Vegas' first Jewish burial garden. Brewster founded King David Mortuary in 2001 and also helped create the Chesed Indigent Burial Fund, which assists families who cannot otherwise afford Jewish burial services.

Greenspun, Brian, 1946-

Brian Greenspun is the publisher and editor of the Las Vegas Sun, a newspaper founded by his parents Hank and Barbara Greenspun in 1950. Brian Greenspun is also the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and sole owner of the Sun's parent company, Greenspun Media Group. He is active in numerous civic and charitable organizations in the Las Vegas, Nevada community and is a Trustee of the University of Nevada Las Vegas Foundation, the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance, and The Brookings Institution.
