Abstract

Oral history interview with Christiaan Van Buuren conducted by David Schwartz on June 30, 2015 for the Table Games Management Oral History Project. In this interview, Van Buuren recalls his early career working as a card dealer and assistant casino manager in South Africa. He also discusses the gaming school he ran at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, surveillance for Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, work as a casino consultant for Kangwonland casino in South Korea, and work as a floor supervisor for the SLS Las Vegas.

Abstract

Oral history interview with F. Lorin Ronnow conducted by Mindy Braver on March 11, 1981 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Ronnow discusses his personal history in Las Vegas, Nevada after being hired by the Union Pacific Railroad to play for their baseball team in 1928. Ronnow discusses being a hoisting engineer during the construction of the Hoover Dam, the economic benefit of the dam during the Great Depression, and his own business ventures in Las Vegas. Ronnow describes his career in banking, how Las Vegas has changed, and prominent celebrities coming to Nevada to divorce. Ronnow also discusses occupational discrimination against African Americans and women.

Oral history interview with Elaine and Jim McCormick conducted by Nancy Weber on March 11, 1981 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Elaine McCormick's son, Jim McCormick, was present to clarify information for his mother in the first half, then was the interview subject in the second half. Elaine McCormick discusses life as a homemaker, housewife, and owner of the Green Shack Restaurant after moving to Las Vegas, Nevada from California in 1935. Jim McCormick discusses his early life navigating Las Vegas roads, local entertainers, the weather, and Las Vegas population growth.

Shelia White oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Shelia White conducted by Irene Rostine on May 24, 2012 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. White opens her interview by discussing her move to Boulder City, Nevada in 1953 with her mother. White then talks about her experiences working for the Southern Nevada Telephone company in the 1960s as a switchboard operator and how she eventually became a low-level customer service manager. She describes leaving the Southern Nevada Telephone company and being hired at the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino. White also discusses the writer Celesta Lowe, the Lowe family, and the MGM Grand fire in great detail.

Oral history interview with Theda Grinnell conducted by Fletcher Corey on February 28, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Grinnell first talks about her move to Nevada and both her and her husband’s employment at the Nevada Test Site. She also talks about the atomic testing blasts, the United States' competition with Russia on nuclear technology, and her employment history. Grinnell later discusses her church membership and goes into detail about the race riots and how they involved and impacted her family. She ends the interview with a discussion of flash floods, the Culinary Workers Union, how World War II affected industry in Las Vegas industry, and the social changes in Las Vegas.

Abstract

Oral history interview with John McKay conducted by Donna Malloy on March 03, 1980 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, McKay talks about his experiences living in Las Vegas, Nevada since the 1950s. McKay begins by speaking about his family history, his career in the electronics and engineering field for aerospace, as well as his experiences in two wars. Moreover, McKay speaks about his hobbies of hunting and fishing and his time as a musician around Las Vegas. McKay also spends time going over how the city of Las Vegas has grown and changed, the increase in crime, and the extreme floods in the 1950s. Lastly, McKay talks about the Nuclear Test Site, how casino gaming chips were used as money around the city, how the city of Las Vegas started and the future of the valley.
