Wiener, Kittie, 1891-1977

Kitty Wiener was a Las Vegas, Nevada businesswoman and prominent community member. She moved to Las Vegas in 1931 with her husband, Louis Wiener, Sr. Kitty Wiener helped manage her husband's tailor shop on Fremont Street and also worked as a seamstress. Her son was prominent attorney Louis Wiener, Jr.

Thomas, Sonny

Sandy C. Thomas is better known as Sonny. Sonny Thomas was born in Fordyce, Arkansas on Feburary 6, 1940. In 1959, Sonny arrived in Las Vegas looking for the promised employment opportunities. His first job was as a bus boy at El Rancho. Over the course of the next thirty years, he moved from one job to another, each time gaining more responsibility. His last hotel role was as shipping and receiving manager at the MGM. While working at the MGM, Sonny finally secured a part-time second job with Davis Funeral Home.

Hyman, Stanley

Stanley Hyman (1925-1999) was a district manager at Farmers Insurance and a Navy veteran who lived in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1951 until his death in 1999. Hyman was born August 26, 1925, in San Francisco, California. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946. Hyman moved to Las Vegas in May 1951 and was active in the local community. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce, and chaired several United Fund drives.

Hausch, Mary, 1949-

Mary Hausch was born September of 1949 in Akron, Ohio. Hausch arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada during a spring vacation with four friends. The spontaneity of the trip and her enjoyment of the weather resulted in her applying for, and getting, a reporter position at the Las Vegas Review- Journal (R-J). For the next nineteen years, she worked her way up the newspaper ladder, covered local education issues that included desegregation, a groundbreaking series of Prisoners of War- Missing in Action war stories, and the Nevada legislature.

Nathalie Martinez is one of the original members of the Latinx Voices project team in 2018 and remained a leader on the project which culminated in 2021. 2021 is also the year that she graduated from UNLV.

Gay, James A., III, 1916-1999

James A. Gay III was born March 6th, 1916 in Fordyce, Arkansas. Arriving in 1946, Gay became the first African-American mortician in Las Vegas. He later worked as Assistant Manager of the Sands Hotel and Casino and Union Plaza while serving as an executive board member of the Culinary Union. Instrumental in the Las Vegas community, Gay worked to improved race relations, addressing social, economic, and civic issues. Gay was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1988.
