The Larry A. Strate Faculty Papers (approximately 1985-2023) are comprised primarily of scholarly articles and papers from the Pacific Southwest Academy of Legal Studies in Business annual conferences written by Strate during his time as a business law professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Materials also include personal memoir written by Strate about his life.
The Paul E. Meacham Faculty Papers (approximately 1977-1998) are comprised of articles and reports relating to the development of community colleges as well as organization and administration in higher education throughout the United States. The collection also includes course readers for EDA 731 Organization and Administration in Higher Education taught at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The Showboat Atlantic City Photograph Collection (1986) contains black-and-white and color photographic prints and conceptual sketches of the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The photographs depict casino patrons in various locations throughout the Showboat, and the sketches show exterior and interior designs.
On March 5, 1978, collector Wendy Christian interviewed truck driver Henry Clay Davis (born April 19, 1900 in Irondale, Virginia) in his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. This interview covers Henry Clay Davis’s personal life history as a resident of Las Vegas, which includes hunting and fishing. He also discusses employment, the railroad, old hotels, the Davis Dam, and Lake Mead. Additionally, he offers a detailed description of the Helldorado.
In 1984, with the advice of his father ringing in his ears, Brad Nelson uprooted his wife and two children from their Denver home and moved them to Henderson, Nevada, where he would begin a new adventure in shaping the new master-planned community of Green Valley with Mark Fine and American Nevada Corporation (ANC). Nelson, lifelong Nebraskan and only child of his parents, arrived armed with a Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture with urban planning option, a Master's degree in urban planning, and fifteen years of planning and executive experience with the national firm of Harmon, O'Donnell and Henniger Planning Consultants. He arrived in time to plan Green Valley's first village, the Village of Silver Spring. By the time he left ANC for Lake Las Vegas in 1999, his work was done and most large parcels had been sold. Oral history interview with Domingo Cambeiro conducted by Stefani Evans and Claytee D. White on October 18, 2016 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Cambeiro discusses his upbringing in Havana, Cuba. He talks about his initial interests in architecture, starting his own architecture drawing service, and attending the University of Havana. Cambeiro recalls submitting a request to leave Cuba, emigrating to the United States, and arriving in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1962. Cambeiro talks about working with Las Vegas architect Julius Gabriel, obtaining his architecture license, and starting an architectural firm. Lastly, Cambeiro discusses being selected to create architectural drawings for the Thomas & Mack Center.
Cleveland A. Earle Rinker was born in Indiana in 1883 to S. Cleveland Rinker and Isadora (Fenwick) Rinker. Shortly after his twentieth birthday Rinker went to Parker, Indiana, seeking work as a stenographer. He soon began working as a clerk for Thomas Condon, a coal and oil dealer who was also an enthusiastic investor in Nevada gold mines. Condon encouraged Rinker to seek his fortune in the gold fields and, in late October of 1906, Rinker boarded a train to make the journey to Goldfield, Nevada.
The Grace Hayes Papers (1900-1989) include personal papers and financial papers pertaining to the Grace Hayes Lodge (formerly the Red Rooster), a nightclub on the Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection includes financial documents, newspaper clippings about Hayes and her family, personal correspondence, career mementos, legal documents, and photograph albums.
