Biographical / Historical Note

Dr. Paul Elritt Meacham was born on June 4, 1936 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He earned his undergraduate degree in music from Tennessee State University and a masters degree in music from the University of Michigan. He later became the first Africa American student to earn his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Texas. Dr. Meacham and his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1981. He served as president of the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) from 1983 to 1994. He also held the distinction as CSN's longest-serving and first African American president. Following his tenure at CSN, Dr. Meacham was a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for nine years and eventually attained emeritus status at both UNLV and CSN. Dr. Meacham passed away on December 7, 2019.
