Abstract

Oral history interview with Barbara Buckley, Kevin Buckley, Michael Buckley, Jill Buckley and Lindsay Stilwell conducted by Claytee White on January 28, 2014 for the West Charleston Neighborhoods-- An Oral History Project of Ward 6. Kevin discusses the early Pinto Palomino neighborhood, working as a teenager, black-white relations, his education, serving as one of Howard Hughes physicians, and the move to Las Vegas. Barbara talks about the difference between Flintridge, California, and Las Vegas in 1968 when the family first arrived. The family members also discuss community participation and hotel-casino entertainment for young couples, and rearing children in Las Vegas.

Scope and Contents

The California Pictures Corporation series (approximately 1919-1965) consists of records pertaining to the company's film production and corporate operations. Film-related records depict the production side of the 1947 film The Sin of Harold Diddlebock, as well as the initial filming of the 1950 Hughes Production film, Vendetta, which Preston Sturges initially directed and produced. Other film-related materials include production logs, actor and writer contracts, scripts, and photographic prints relating to the two films. The corporate records include publicity, financial, and legal materials detailing the creation, management, and dissolution of California Pictures.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Bill Armstrong conducted by Anthony Robone on February 20, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In the interview, Armstrong discusses his time bootlegging in Kentucky before arriving in Las Vegas, Nevada, his involvement with the Las Vegas dealers, and the weather as it relates to other parts of the country. He also discusses the impacts of the work of Howard Hughes on the town, the construction of Hoover Dam, the above-ground atomic testing, the growth of Las Vegas and tourism, changes in gambling habits for the next generation, and the social and recreational activities of residents.
