Description

In this multi-part interview, Louis Wiener, Jr. discusses coming to Las Vegas from Pittsburgh at a young age, attending Las Vegas High School and University of Nevada Reno. He attended law school at University of California at Berkeley and passed the Nevada State Bar in 1941. He established a practice, Jones, Wiener and Jones, with Bob Jones and Cliff Jones and later with Herb Jones. He had another practice with Neil Galatz and Dave Goldwater, retiring in 1988. Wiener had other business ventures that allowed him to do pro bono work as a lawyer. Wiener discusses his family, including former spouses, his children, and various aspects of his career as an attorney in Las Vegas, representing hotels in the Greenspun antitrust lawsuit, and as an attorney for Bugsy Siegel. He says of his success, "I'm just lucky. I was here at the right time and I picked the right people to help."

On February 24, 1979, collector Elyse Rozinsky interviewed file clerk, Janet Garry, (born on November 24th, 1927, in Louisiana) at her home in Bonanza Village Trailer Park in Las Vegas, Nevada. This interview covers the growth of Las Vegas from 1952 to 1979. Janet recalls the early years of the television and the telephone. She also discusses her own personal experience of raising a family in Las Vegas.

On March 5, 1980, Clark Ellsworth interviewed his grandmother, Emma Ellsworth (born 1902 in Payson, Utah) about her experiences in Southern Nevada. Ellsworth first talks about growing up in Utah and getting married before moving to Pioche, Nevada during the Great Depression. She also talks about bringing up a family in Las Vegas as well as her and her husband’s work in running Beneficial Life, a life insurance business, in Las Vegas. Ellsworth also talks about the Mormon churches in Las Vegas, the schools her children attended, and the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren she had at the time.

In 2002, Marty Walsh and her husband purchased a home in the John S. Park Neighborhood. Three aspects attracted them to their 1941-built home: the quality construction; the aesthetics and details of the house; and the "old-fashion human element" that she associated with her grandparents. Marty describes their relocation to Las Vegas after living for nine years in Ireland and her joy of discovering the John S. Park community. For her there is a neighborliness that they found in the form of the Neighborhood Watch. She feels the neighborhood still has work to do, but the gentrification has had splendid results as new "urbanites" replace original homeowners. From her artist point of view, she also provides thoughts about the impact the artist community of musicians, painters, and creative artists has had on the neighborhood. Stella Champo Iaconis Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Stella Champo Iaconis Photograph Collection (approximately 1890-1950) contains four black-and-white photographic prints of the Helldorado Days celebration held in Las Vegas, Nevada and three photograph albums with family photographs. Included in the albums are images of Italian family members, and Stella and her sister Irene as young children on their family ranch in Southern Nevada in the 1920s and 1930s. The Champo family and other Las Vegas residents are prominently featured in photographs taken across Las Vegas, including at the Boulder Dam (Hoover Dam) dedication, the family's farm, and outside residences near downtown Las Vegas. The third album covers Stella Champo's personal life, with photographs of her first husband, Walter Cordano (married 1934-1942) and her second husband, John Iaconis. Included are trips to Los Angeles, California; Pioche, Ruth, and Goldfield, Nevada; and early downtown Las Vegas, including the Union Pacific Station. A partial inventory is available for the third album.

The Dorothy Dorothy papers (approximately 1913-1986) document the life of singer, songwriter, columnist, pilot, and farmer, Dorothy Dorothy. Materials contain genealogy records, correspondence, business and organizational records, local history, sheet music, artifacts, and two boxes of photographic prints. Also included are materials relating to her active involvement with animal rights campaigns.

Bob Stupak Professional Papers

Abstract

The Bob Stupak Professional Papers (approximately 1900 to 2007) primarily documents the career of Las Vegas, Nevada casino owner, Bob Stupak. The materials in the collection include the planning of two resorts in Las Vegas, Nevada created by Bob Stupak: Vegas World and the Stratosphere. The collection also includes planning materials for the Titanic Las Vegas, an unbuilt resort envisioned by Stupak. Planning and promotional materials for Stupak's resorts including photographs, memorabilia, audiovisual materials, advertising mockups, and architectural drawings. The collection includes several scrapbooks and photographs of Stupak and his wife Sandy at events around Las Vegas. The materials also document Stupak's political campaigns running for mayor of Las Vegas in 1983 and 1987 and lieutenant governor of Nevada in 2006.
