Sonny Schwartz Recordings and Papers

Abstract

The Sonny Schwartz Recordings and Papers (1928-1998) documents the career of New Jersey journalist and radio personality Sonny Schwartz. Materials include cassette tapes of Schwartz's radio program, Dateline Atlantic City, and his interviews with musicians, comedians, and other entertainers. The collection also contains an assortment of radio programming featuring performers like Frank Sinatra and Bill Cosby. Also included are Schwartz's columns from the Press of Atlantic City, a autobiographical narrative written by baseball player Johnny Bench, and photographs of Schwartz with interviewees and family.

Wilson, Gary Guy, 1941-

Gary Guy Wilson and his architectural firm, Gary Guy Wilson, AIA, Architect Studios, have worked on over 1350 projects in as many as 14 states since 1969. Wilson has built his firm’s reputation over a period of 40 years. From towering hotel and casino projects to modest individual residential projects, Wilson has instilled identity by combining and balancing “elements of practicality, utility, and delight” into architecture designed with functionality and economic awareness in mind.

Grants included the Community Development Block grant and funding sources that Operation Life utilized to fund their services and projects, such as the city of Las Vegas, Clark County, the state of Nevada, the Community Services Administration, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and various private funding sources, such as the Ford Foundation.

Abstract

The Women's Research Institute of Nevada Records (1997-2017) document the establishment and activities of the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The majority of the collection represents research files, correspondence, and other working files kept by Joanne Goodwin, professor of history at UNLV and executive director of WRIN from 1999 to 2017. Materials include information about the creation of WRIN as well as its partnership with the National Education for Women's Leadership program to create NEW Leadership Nevada. Digital files in this collection include WRIN and NEW Leadership event photographs and administrative files used for WRIN operations. Digital files also include copies of annual reports and WRIN newsletters. Also included is a copy of Looking Back at Nevada Women, a documentary hosted by Goodwin. The records provide information on the creation of WRIN and the activities, events, and day to day operations of the institute including information on obtaining and maintaining funding for a research institute.

The Castaways Hotel and Casino: photographic film

Description

An exterior view of the Castaways Hotel and Casino. A marquee advertises Open now all new rooms", "air conditioned", "pool". The Castaways was a hotel and casino in Paradise, Nevada that operated from 1963 to 1987 on the Las Vegas Strip. The property had originally been San Souci Auto Court, an early motel which opened in the 1930s, and developed into Sans Souci Hotel in the 1950s. In 1962, the resort became Castaways Hotel & Casino. The hotel had a 1,500-gallon aquarium in its bar. In 1967, the Castaways was sold to billionaire Howard Hughes for $3 million dollars. The resort operated until July 1987, when it closed and was demolished and the property was purchased by Steve Wynn. The resort became the Mirage, opening on November 22, 1989. The property is located at 3400 South Las Vegas Boulevard Las Vegas, NV 89109.

Abstract

The Maggie Mancuso Collection of Film Locations dates from 1994 to 2001 and consists primarily of color photographs of locations throughout Las Vegas, Nevada for the film Casino (1995) as well as other productions. Several photographs were taped together to form a panoramic image. The collection also includes some production materials from the filming of Casino, as well as other films and projects.
