Abstract

The Levi Walter Syphus Papers date from 1889 to 1930 and document the activities of Levi Walter Syphus (1866-1949), a southern Nevada pioneer and state legislator. The collection contains a financial ledger, meeting minutes of the Board of Control of the Lincoln County Experiment Farm, and records of experiments in refining magnesite.

Torjman, David

David Torjman was born March 4, 1939 and raised in Fez, Morocco and was educated in trades at the ORT Vocational School. He then studied at Sunderland Talmudical College in England before immigrating to the United States. In 1964, he was recruited to teach at Temple Beth Sholom. Soon after, Torjman met Iris Schwartz who had moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to live with her aunt. Less than two years later, they had a New York wedding and then a local wedding thrown by the Sisterhood at Temple Beth Sholom. Torjman was a Hebrew school teacher until 1975.

Johnson, Lubertha, 1906-1989

Lubterhta Miller Johnson was born on July 22, 1906 in Ackerman, Mississippi. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1943. She was a nurse, director of an anti-poverty program, a civic leader, and a director of a pre-school.
