“THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER”
Francis Scott Key
Oh! say, can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gal- lantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, and bombs bursting in airH
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there!
Oh! say, does the star--spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
ACADEMIC DRESS
THE HISTORY OF ACADEMIC DRESS reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. It appears that academic clothing was first introduced and worn at Cambridge and Oxford Universities in England in the thriteenth century. Various modifications were soon intro duced resulting in great diversity in color and style of cap, gown and hood worn at different institutions.
The European custom was carried to America with the establishment of our own colleges and universities. In 1895 an academic code of dress was adopted and the standards accepted by most of the colleges and universities in the United States. Today, the black robe, hood and cap are generally worn. The following description covers dress worn at the University of Nevada.
Three different types of black gowns may be distinguished in the academic procession. The bachelors gowns have long pointed sleeves, the masters gowns have oblong sleeves with an arc cut away in the front. The doctors gowns are faced with velvet and have bell-shaped sleeves with three bars of velvet.
The Oxford cap, the so-called mortarboard, is black and has a long tassel fastened to the middle of the top that is usually worn pendent over the left front of the cap. At many institutions colored tassels are worn to indicate the candidate’s school or college. Here, at the University of Nevada the black tassel is worn on the cap for all bachelor degrees.
The hood, draped from the shoulders, denotes by its length and colors, the degree and the institution which conferred the degree.
