On February 22, 1975, Barry Merrell interviewed former railroad worker Guy Hamblin (born 1896 in Clover Valley, Nevada) in his home at 4306 Kay Place, Las Vegas, Nevada about the history of Southern Nevada. Specifically, the two discuss Hamblin moving from different towns in Nevada before settling down in Southern Nevada, viewing the above-ground atomic bomb tests, early Fremont Street, and his work on the railroad. In addition, Hamblin also discusses the demographic and economic changes that he has seen in Las Vegas.

Abstract

The Robert Woodruff Photograph Collection (1900s-1970s) consists of ninety-seven black-and-white photographs of locations and events in Clark County, Nevada. Locations include Las Vegas, Henderson, and Searchlight, Nevada, as well as the Hoover Dam. The majority of the images were taken between 1934 and 1962.

Dungan, Flora

Flora (Turchinsky) Dungan (1917-1973) was a Nevada Assemblywoman and University Regent who successfully sued the state of Nevada twice in order to gain additional representation for Clark County in the legislature and the Board of Regents (the governing board of the state's university system). As a result of Dungan v. Sawyer in 1964, seats were reapportioned in the Nevada legislature and Clark County gained four seats in the Assembly and seven in the Senate. After Dungan sued Nevada again in 1967, Clark County gained the majority of seats on the Board of Regents.

Typed on a piece of paper attached to the image: "Howard Hughes lands in New York in flight from coast New York City-- the huge Lockheed "Flying Laboratory" of Howard Hughes, oil millionaire and air speed racer, being taxied to its hangar at Floyd Bennet field here, July 4th, shortly after landing on its leisurely trip from the Pacific Coast. Hughes and his crew will take off in it next week on a flight to Paris which may be followed by a flight around the world."

Abstract

The Alan Bible Photograph Collection contains color photographic prints of the Hoover Dam; an aerial of the Colorado River; an Atomic Energy Commission drill rig in Central Nevada; and views of a Nuclear Rocket Development Station (NRDS) facility at the Nevada Test Site between approximately 1970 to 1974. These photographs are captioned and were originally framed and hung in Alan Bible's United States Senate office.
