Thomas discusses her family history and arriving to Boulder City, Nevada in 1930. Thomas describes housing in Boulder City and explains that people needed to build their own homes in the 1930s. She then discusses prostitution becoming illegal in Nevada, the Helldorado Parade, and the construction of Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam). Lastly, Thomas recalls how her musical career began and entertainment in casinos.

She also discusses healthcare and talks about the flu epidemic of 1918 and how it affected Southern Nevada.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Harry Brown conducted by James Hopkins for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. During the interview, Brown describes some of his experiences from being in the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, the equivalent of a modern search and rescue team, which was deputized by the sheriff. Brown additionally describes the tradition of the Helldorado parades, in which he was a part, and he provides his overall thoughts on living in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dieleman, Jake W., 1904-2002

Jake W. Dieleman was born February 21, 1904 in Axel, Netherlands. He lived in Boulder City, Nevada for many years after moving to the area to work as a crane operator on the construction of Hoover Dam. He later served in the Nevada State Assembly and on the Boulder City Council. He passed away in 2002 in Kanarraville, Utah.
