Pahrump Valley High School Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Pahrump Valley High School Photograph Collection (approximately 1974-1976) consists of black-and-white images of students and staff in various locations in and around the Pahrump Valley High School campus in Southern Nevada. Images document sporting events, classroom activities, and campus buildings. Featured in some of the images are football and basketball teams, song leaders, teachers, coaches, and the landscape around Pahrump, including Mt. Charleston from a distance. This collection consists entirely of digital surrogates.

Crockett Family Photographs

Abstract

The Crockett Family Photographs (approximately 1940-2008) are comprised of aerial photographs of Alamo Airport (later Harry Reid International Airport) and the surrounding Las Vegas Valley in the 1940s and 1950s. Photographs of the interior, exterior, and airfield at Alamo Airport document the early stages of what is now one of the busiest international airports in the United States. The collection also contains audiovisual material, which depict events including the Miss Rodeo America pageant and the Sahara Cup boat races on Lake Mead, and locations including Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada and Hoover Dam. A significant portion of the collection consists of photographs of the Crockett family at various events, on family vacations, and their home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 2016 Presidential Debate Memorabilia (2016) is comprised of commemorative items created by the Commission on Presidential Debates for the presidential debate held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The collection includes memorabilia such as t-shirts, posters, and a photograph book commemorating the event. Also included is a campus guide to UNLV for external media and a dinner menu and program for a special dinner hosted by the UNLV Foundation.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Theses, Dissertations, and Honors Papers (approximately 1967-2024) contain the physical copies of the theses, dissertations, and honors papers filed by students of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) from 1967 to 2024. There are approximately 5,756 titles that originate from a wide variety of departments across the UNLV campus, including (but not limited to): history, criminal justice, fine arts, engineering, and the sciences. Electronic theses and dissertations (2017-2020) were transferred to UNLV University Archives for preservation purposes and are not accessible through Special Collections. Specific instructions for viewing those items can be found in the inventory.

The John C. Kepper Faculty Papers (approximately 1966-1977) are comprised of articles and research on geology written by University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) faculty member, John C. Kepper. The collection also includes drafts and notes of the manuscripts, Paleoenvironmental Patterns in a Middle to Early Upper Cambrian Interval in the Easter Great Basin and Origin of Massive Banded Carbonates with "Bluebird Structures" in the Cambrian of the Eastern Great Basin.

James E. Deacon Pupfish Research Files

Abstract

The James E. Deacon Pupfish Research Files (approximately 1960-2015) contain files kept by James E. Deacon, who was a faculty member in the biological sciences and environmental studies department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The collection primarily contains research files and audiovisual recordings about the Devils Hole pupfish, an endangered species of desert fish only found in Nevada. Also included are copies of Deacon’s testimony and reports for a hearing from 2011 on the probable groundwater pumping by the Southern Nevada Water Authority in Spring, Cave, Dry Lake, and Delamar Valleys (SCDD) in Nevada. The SCDD files also contain copies of exhibits referenced by Deacon in his initial and rebuttal reports for the hearing.

The John R. Wilbanks Antarctica Research Papers (approximately 1973-1983) consist of research and grant files kept by Wilbanks, a professor of geoscience at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Materials primarily document Wilbanks' field work in West Antarctica, including Marie Byrd Land. The collection also contains maps, photographs, field notebooks, and issues of the American Polar Society's The Polar Times.

The David L. Weide Research Papers (approximately 1954-2000) are comprised of materials that represent Weide's research on geographical issues in the western United States. Collection materials include reports, U.S. Geologic Survey maps, and field notes as well as scholarly articles published by Weide. The collection also includes Weide's notes from classes and research from when he was a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles.
